My buddy has been using an umbrella for 30 years and loves it. Just puts his one pole in the pack and carrys the darn thing, which helps avoid the low hanging branches and sideways driven rain.
Here is what I have:

$12 Tyvek jump suit with hood at Lowes. Cut off pants section. Top makes a 2.7 oz rain jacket.

I am not young enough to know everything.
I picked up a Frogg Toggs poncho at wally world for only about 10$.I've not tried it yet but for warmer weather it might work and @ 10$ IMO it's worth a try....
I like to have a cuben rain jacket for heavy storms. Then when it gets hot I just use my Liberty ridge hooded wind shirt. The Cuben weighs 3.18 oz the wind shirt 1.98. I believe zpacks is about 5 oz.
Frogg Togg Dri-Ducks. Cheap, light, and very effective. http://www.froggtoggs.com/#outerwear/driducks/DS1204/
Looks like I will be heading out to REI tomorrow to check out the precip. Thanks everyone!
