So. I'm planning my record-breaking thru, intending to finish just after my 90th birthday. Here are the 10 parameters and assumptions:
1. My sense of humor will not deteriorate beyond its current level in the next 30 years.
2. Only more mature observations than I would make myself will be useful, so please only post if you are older than 10.
3. If I don't make it (sob! yes this must be a very late mid-life crisis you are witnessing) this planning will be useful for others.
4. White Blaze will be a blue chip stock traded on the stock exchange.
5. I will be able to average 10 miles a day south of the New Hampshire boarder, 8 miles a day in New Hampshire and Maine south of Caratunk, and 10 miles a day for the balance of Maine.
6. I will stealth camp near the top of Katahdin and take two days to summit...
7. I will be really good at camping, and my equipment will be very light!!!
8. I will be much more comfortable in the cold than in the heat.
9. Everyone will be very nice to me.
10. With thirty years to plan this hike, I should have it pretty well worked out.
The first blush plan:
Start SOBO at Harper's Ferry on January 1st. Hike downhill both ways in the Smokies. Finish to Springer, then return to Harper's Ferry to go NOBO to Franconia Notch. Use every chair lift that I can to gain altitude along the way. It is likely that ski areas will run their lifts even if they are closed because of the celebrity status of the hiker. Jump up to Katahdin (hopefully I'll still only be 89 then) and summit, then head south to Mount Washington. Do White Mountains downhill both ways.
All this cause I got out to hike Sleeping Giant really early this morning to beat the heat and started daydreaming...
got any suggestions?
