Default Can You Camp Beside the AT Near Daleville ??

    Hey Fellow Hikers,

I am section hiking with 3 friends in a couple of weeks in central VA, and driving to Daleville and spending the night there before beginning our hike. We were thinking about staying at the Super 8 that is right by the trail in Daleville, but noticed on Google Earth that there is a potetial campsite on the opposite (East) side of the AT right by the motel. Has anyone stealth camped there? Is it private property? Any experience, advice, admonishment welcome.

    Thanks.
A fair hiker, but a little unbalanced.

    Springer to Fontana Dam
    Atkins, VA to Troutville
Manassas Gap, VA to Port Clinton, PA
N Adams, MA to Danby, VT

I don't think there is any spot for camping there at all. I live 5 miles from Daleville... What is the date you will be arriving in Daleville? You could stay with us if we will be home. We are leaving, ourselves, to do a section in the Smokies on the 23rd of July. I would be happy to let you stay with us for the night if you will be arriving before then.

    Thanks.
I have tented there many times, no one ever bothered us. One time 3 of us tented there for 5 nights before hitching to Traildays.

I remember there being a camp site about 100 yards on either side of the crossing, but I remember there being only room for one or two tents. There are a lot of uneven sites on the north side of the trail just a little bit further.
It is a very busy area with two gas stations right next to the trail. My guess is that you'll be fine if you keep your guard, and do commonsensical things like not keep your stuff there while you go to town to get a tempting meal.

Pick up one of those coupon books for motels, they have the very best rate for the Howard Johnson. (seems like it is $40 or less) Stay, have a nice breakfast, and relax before your hike.

I seem to recall a few spots not too far from the road, like a mile or more - stay off the trail who will be out there after dark?

Great spot, super town for food and resupply.
