fife n drum or the B+B up rt 7 (sorry don't rember the name) are all popular with hikers. but your gona pay for the location. for cheap crash pad typ acomdations try down rt7 in new milford not walking distance from AT.

I read in someone's Trail Journal entry just now that the Episcopal Church in town will allow thrus to tent in their backyard or thereabouts.
    The more miles, the merrier!

    Thanks for the info.
I got a text earlier today from a friend who is thruhiking and was in need of a place to stay, apparently the weather was bad. The AT Guide mentioned Fife N Drum so I hooked them up with them. A text later said they got there OK and it seemed like a great place to stay.
They were told the church does not allow hikers any longer (don't know if that's good info though).

Glad your friend found a place to stay. Overall, Kent isn't a very popular place for thru's.

They were looking for a place inside due to severe weather. The Fife and Drum came to their rescue!

Glad it worked out. We sorely needed that severe weather - been dry as a bone out there this year.

For alternatives to the A/T shelter just south of 341 during tough weather. New Milford has Red Carpet (bad reviews online but a few of the rooms don't smell like mouldy suitcases; Rocky River is an option, both are $60 and up and a long way from the trail; The Hitching Post is in Cornwall Bridge, same price) Macedonia Brook SP is an option for tenting, the A/T I think used to go through the park over Cobble Mtn.. There are many places to camp along the Housatonic once you come off St. Johns ledges and down to the dirt road. Kent is an expensive town with a couple of the private schools charging kids over $50K a year I heard.
If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.

Plus I'll say that there is good food in Kent. Kent Pizza Garden has an all you can eat night on Wednesday with every variation you can imagine of types of pasta and sauces, from Pesto to Meatballs to Sausage. AYCA with Karaoke. I was able to chow down two full plates and half a third. Thursday night they have a Tbone steak special, also around $10. Beer is not cheap except for the PBR which is $3. Near Bulls Bridge or Gaylordsville on Rt7 there is a restaurant that serves $2 domestic and $3 imported and microbrew beers, Monday through Thursday before 6pm. Have a good one!!!

When I work at the area Prep schools and have to stay up there or work one day and day hike the next, I stay at The Hitching Post in Cornwall Bridge, it's cheap and clean. A small grocery and small outfitter are right near on Rt. 7. Less than a half mile from the trail at Rt. 4.. But the food at the Kent Pizza Garden is really good.

Kent isn't too popular with thru-hikers because it is pricy - - some thru-hikers do go there though and it isn't a bad town if you aren't too price sensitive.
The Fife and Drum has rooms that are quite nice - not exactly a hostel with bunks but not a swank hotel either. I think that a room is about $80 - just a guess.
They also have a lovely piano bar and restaurant - - the food is a little fancy for most long distance hikers but the staff is very welcoming, they keep a hiker register
and are happy to have you. There is also a great breakfast place with red and white checkered table cloths - right on main street - can't remember the name.

I hope in the future we will be able to offer hikers better accomodations than currently. And, I'm sorry for my outburst in an earlier thread, I have grown to like hikers.
