I think the hiking content could be pretty well argued, the guy did a 3 1/2 year long thru hike of the Israel National Trail, in sandals no less.

Saw a Dead Sea Scroll exhibit at a museum a few years ago. They had some 2000 yo sandals found at Qumran. They were almost indistinguishable from modern sandals with thin leather straps.
