Default 2014 thru hike gear list

As a wannabe thru hiker in 2014 after I finish college I want to start putting gear together. So I don't have to buy it all at once(college kid budget!!) and was looking for ideas of stuff to bring! Other than the basics. I've been on a few overnight trips but nothing longer than a weekend(. 3 day big creek loop in the smokies the day after Christmas. Can you say cold!!!). But anyways. Any help would be much thanks!

The first site I ever looked at when I started getting into backpacking a few years ago was Erik the Black's blog. He's got some helpful articles/videos/gear lists, or at least they were helpful to me when I had no clue what to bring on a long hike. I mainly search these forums and backpackinglight.com to answer any questions I have. And of course there may be region/trail specific forums, such as alatrails.com that I look at, since I recently moved down here in the southeast.

Hi Zac. I'm also trying to simultaneously save up for a 2014 thru hike and college.. It's tough. I've bought a lot of dirt cheap gear, some of which has served me well. In my experience, though, it's worth it to invest in a decent sleeping mat and rain gear. My $20 campmor mat popped half way through a three week backpacking trip, and my cheap rain gear stopped keeping the water out. In some cases it's better to invest in stuff that will last, I guess. Just my two cents... best of luck!

Hi, Dumb questions: all those numbers were weights in ounces? What does 00 weight mean? What is skin-out weight?
