Oh my. Glad nobody was hurt. Feel bad for the owners.

I stayed there in 2003. Very nice people. A couple of us asked the owner about getting a shuttle to the grocery (we had no idea where to go). The owner just gave me the keys to his old minivan and told me where to drive. He said "just put the keys back on the counter when you get back".

I stayed their twice and both times had nothing but a great time, hopefully they will re-build, but the motels up the hill do have swimming pools.

Very, very sad. So glad no one was hurt.

As HikerMom said before, I also recommend Woods Hole Hostel as an alternative.

Very sad indeed. Was Brenda still associated with the Rendezvous Motel?

Wow. That's terrible. I hope they're able to recover, whether they rebuild or not. Good thoughts out to them.

I haven't heard anything yet. Get in touch with me when you get close to your hike. We can "talk" about resupply options....

Also really sorry to hear it. They held and sent a package for me with no complaints even though I couldn't stay there because they were booked up. It's such a convenient location as far as proximity to the trail.

Regarding other options in Pearisburg: it was pretty easy, in my experience, to walk or hitch a ride up the hill to the area with the grocery stores and restaurants. I was walking that way and got picked up without even having a thumb out. I stayed at the Holiday Motor Lodge with about a bajillion other hikers in 2011 and had a really fun time. It's a U-shaped setup with a few storeys, everyone's got a balcony looking across the courtyard, and the clientele is pretty diverse, so the opportunities for Rear Window-style people-watching were incredible. The check-out time was 1:00pm. It was cheap and very hiker-tolerant. I'd give it a recommendation.

I would doubt it. I bet the city has trouble just getting someone to pay to clean up the site.

Of course, you could just stop short of Pearisburg at Wood Hole Hostel. It's a great place to kick up...by far my favorite hostel.

Wow, and I was going to stay there next weekend. I'm going to stay up the hill now, but the Rendezvous was about as convenient to the trail as you could get.

Meth lab? Can't be totally ruled out. Looks like it was centerally located and if I remember right the office was on the end near the road. Unless a hiker was cooking in the room (food that is) and his alky stove fell over. Lets hope that isn't the case...

Don Raines dropped me and my buddy off at the Rendezvous last Saturday. The owner was out of the office but I called him and let him know that I would be leaving a car there on Wednesday afternoon for the 2nd part of my hike. Monday evening, I heard the news and saw this on Thursday morning.

Stopped in this afternoon to retrieve my car and saw a bunch of locals surveying the damage. The word I heard was that the fire started in the laundry area, but that not a direct report from any authorities. As others have said, it was a pretty damn convenient option for anyone passing through the New River Valley...

Hate to hear it. Have some good memories from that place during my thru hike. Here's a photo of the Rendezvous Motel during better times – taken on Friday, June 10, 1994. After nearly 20 years, the sign remains the same.

My husband and I stayed at the Rendezvous last May. Jerry was very helpful and the room was comfortable. We had the end room and spent a fair amount of time sitting in the swing looking at the mountainside we'd just hiked down. Nothing but good memories. I'm sad to think that now it's nothing but memories, period.
