I have tried a few and they have, with one exception, been quite bland. The exception is called "Milkman" and many years ago was suggested in an early edition of Townsend's multiple edition best seller. I was purchasing it locally in Publix supermarket, until they decided to stop carrying it in favor of brand X, probably because they could make more profit with the new item, or, even more likely, it just wasnt selling. I am the only one I know that buys powdered milk. Anyway, looked up the distributor Familiar Foods, Industry, California, and from internet their phone at 626-336-2066. You can buy a whole case for 34.14. I did.
Its great to add to just about anything you cook and gives you a 8 g protein/serving. I love milk and have found that if you take Sgt Rocks container with screw-on lid and mix your powdered milk and water to correct portions in it and shake like hell to aerate the mixture it becomes quite tasty. Food for thought, so to speak., But its a light way to have a different, beneficial taste. |

Just found whole dried milk in the supermarket last night. Had heard of this before, but the supermarket keeps it hidden. It's not with the powdered milks but with ethnic foods. Nestle apparently markets it to third world countries as infant formula (??). It does taste like whole milk, with a full fatty flavor. Maybe I'll mix it half and half with nonfat and have 2% milk.

Tracyam:
There are lots of "Connoisseurs" of dehydrated milk and I prefer the Brand Milkman, like you, over all the rest. No clumps, dissolves quickly and is the one that tastes closest to real milk. Use it evey morning with my 3 cups of coffee. Contact above to buy it direct and in bulk, and they will accept your personal check-they do mine Last edited by highway; 01-20-2004 at 07:17.. I tried nonfat dry milk on my last trip (had run out of Nido) and it's absolutely tasteless. A joke. And of course, all the milk fat has been skimmed out of it, so you're essentially just drinking filler. Milkman brand is nonfat so it's a ripoff also. |

On my thru, I sent my stove home at Bland, VA and ate cold the rest of the way. Powdered milk and cereal was my main breakfast after that. Cereal is good, quick, and easy, but bulky and difficulty to pack without smashing it to crumbs. Cedar Tree

I always get it at the local organic co-op..I don't remember the brand but will find out. I use the notorious MAIL DROP method...so most all my supplies come form the co-op.

I can't have milk, seriously allergic (not the popular "lactose intolerant" all the YUPPIES seem to have) But, if you live within a few hours travel of Fairfield Ohio (near Cincinnati) Jungle Jims on Rt 4 has everything. Last time I was there, the dried milk isle had about 30 to 50 brands. Yes, there is an isle for it, not nearly as big as the Honey or Hot sauce isle but as most stores the dried mile section is 3 or 4 boxes of one brand, this is pretty neat. Regretfully they don't ship. And my wife has forbidden me to go there unescorted as I tend to go crazy there
Jims is several (I think 20) acres, plus parking lot. Some take a vacation just to see the darn place, and Jim is expanding. There is more dried foods in JJ than there is stock in a normal store. Also, my wife likes Milkman brand, but that is all she has tried. Doctari.

King Arthur Flour company carries a pretty decent powdered whole milk. It has a decent taste and mixes reasonably well. It does much better in hot/warm water than it does cold, but if you have something to shake it up in then cold water is doable. Their catalog and web page has a lot of other dehydrated and dried foods/fruits that help if you're trying to make up your own meals for the trail.

Even the less desirable powdered cow improves with age. Make it up in the evening and let it sit in a nalgene in the creek or spring overnight. Prefer wide mouth bottle to facilitate cleaning.

Have nothing against milk, but haven't had any for about five years.
Had the question posed to me "What is the only creature on the planet that nurses through adulthood , long after childhood, and uses another creatures milk to it?" Hmmmmmmmmm. Is there some benefit to P.M. other than calcium? Lots of sugar/carbs I assume.... Never tried it before but like the suggestions and banter here.

Besides, you won't find many animals who do anything remotely like leaving a perfectly good food source in safe place in order to go on a 2,000 mile walk, either. Go figure. (Let's not even get started with how many in the animal kingdom would backtrack so as to see all the "white blazes".) Well, the list goes on and on... ![]() |

Hey,
Don't think I've ever posted here before, but I've been a member for quite awhile, and I lurk and look at the posts now and again. -I'm a hiker, but as I live a fair distance from the A.T. I'm a member of Sgt. Rocks' board, and I do most of my posting there - Anyway to stop babbling and get to the point: I like the milk substitute from Honeyville Grain, it's whey based but I like the taste. It's also a good price - 4lbs for $9.00 - shipping is $4.99 no matter what amount of items you get. http://store.honeyvillegrain.com/ind...ROD&ProdID=669 They also have the best price on whole dried eggs of anywhere I've been able to find (and I did a lot of looking) |
