Some corporate managers but nobody with any sense, redundant as that may be, thought there would be trouble with Y2K. Some of us even used it to our advantage. We were told to have manufacturer's certification of Y2K compliance on every instrument in our lab -and- to advance the date on each instrument as a test. One old instrument still worked great but had internal software so basic that it didn't have a date entry. But we couldn't honestly say that we could certify it. So kinda as a joke we asked if we could replace it outside our capital budget. And management said yes!

Usually to get new instruments we have to jump through a marathon of hoops before the corporate purse strings loosen. But this time we just dumpstered it and ordered a new one, milking the corporate cash cow. A free toy! Y2K was very good to us. We could use another end of the world rumor but I don't think they're going to fall for that Aztec calendar story.

I worked for one of the largest financial data centers in the world in 1999-2000. Believe me, we were all there at midnight, just in case.

I worked w/ a guy who was certain the world was going to end back in October of 1988, he even took the day off so he could stay home and pray. That one, obviously, didn't happen either.

I was in the Yucatan a couple years ago and some Mayan descendants explained to me that the 2012 date just means the end of an age, not the world, but they like freaking out the yanquis with doomsday stories.

It's like the odometer on an older car rolling over to 00000.

But, the easy , logical explanation does not sit too well with the 'woo-woo' set and/or the easily frightened.

Makes for some fun threads, though.

Default yuengling and metallica

Yuengling and Metallica is always a great combination! Thats what I'd want if the world was going to end. (And some female companionship if possible)
