Smile Easy1 80 year old hiker

I went to Amicalola Falls today and saw a total of 7 thru hikers leaving for Maine. One of these has a trail name of "Coach". He has a mentor with him that is 80 years old. The mentor's trail name is Easy1. Easy1 has hiked the trail 4 times since 1995. This year he is starting out his friend by going with him from Amicalola to Dick's Creek. Easy1 is going to thru hike again next year. I hiked with Easy1 and Coach for about 3 miles. Easy1 stayed right with me the whole hike. Coach lagged behind on the uphills.(Coach is around 55) Easy1 made his own backpack, frontpack and tent. He is a retired engineer. He appeared to be in excellent shape and he was a class act. Coach has a website at www.theplacewithnoname.com and look for BOB

I may have a potential competitor -- Mountain Man made an entry in the trail register on Catawba Mountain in VA last year in the fall. Not sure if he had hiked the whole trail but he was making something like his 389th "assault " (his words) on MacAfee Knob. This was at the age of 89. He's aiming for 400.

Smile Mountain Man

That is an admirable goal he has there Walessp. I would like to be doing the same thing at his age.

My goal is to be shot by a jealous husband while sneaking out a second story window when I'm 99. Of course 400 climbs from catawba shelter up to McAfee would be just as good! Time will tell.
