Hey everyone - I'm thinking about sneaking away for a two-nighter this weekend. I can leave the DC area about 3pm Friday and need to be back around dinner time Sunday. I don't want to drive more than 3-4 hours, which puts me in range of a large part of the AT. A loop would be nice, but not required.

Where would you go? Anyone want to come along?

a weekend loop that fits your needs......Reeds Gap (off park way at Va. 664) up and over three ridges to harpers Creek shelter. Back to Reeds gap via the Mau-Har trail. A great little hike that my family and I will be doing week end as well. Maybe see ya out there.

Have you done the Northern VA section outside of SNP?

There's a beautiful open mountaintop south of Manassas Gap (VA 55) that is one of my favorite places. Last year (? I think), the AT south of US 50 in Northern Virginia was reloed out of a green tunnel and across a beautiful area that apparently used to be a farm.

To hit both of these things, you'd drive to the parking lot on VA 601 then get a shuttle south to VA638 and hike back to your car. You could always go to US522 so that you can stay at Jim and Molly Denton Shelter, which is a really nice one.

This would represent the smallest amount of driving out of DC that you could possibly do, I think.

That relo I mentioned is part of this property, which was given to the PEC and the ATC in 2005, as far as I can tell. The trail is way up on the ridge, which is more open than it looks there. There are fantastic eastward views.

I did the Three Ridges loop recommended by totally Boagus - that's really a great trip. And we even ran into each other Saturday afternoon, then hiked out together Sunday morning!

I'll try to check out the trips north of SNP before I leave DC...hopefully I can find the time!
