MOUNT WASHINGTON, N.H. -- Officials are cracking down on hikers who drop their pants to moon passengers on the Mount Washington cog railway.

"Mooning the cog" is a long tradition for hikers, especially those completing the Appalachian Trail, which passes over the highest point in the northeast.

But the practice offends some, and on several weekends this fall some undercover officers took a ride on the train and stopped it when hikers gave them the salute.

Eight hikers are being charged with a federal offense, since they were on National Forest land. They need to pay a fine or appear in the U.S. District Court in Concord to contest the charge.

My take is that unless hikers are getting vulgar - I mean mooning in a manner that shows the anus or genitals - that this is simply a ridiculous waste of LEO time and tax dollars. I can flip on MTV and see way more skin than a proper moon should show.

I've never ridden it, probably never will, but I am a Cass Scenic Railroad enthusiast and I wouldn't express my displeasure in that manner.

I'll say it again, I dont do it - have never done it and have no desire to do it. At the same time its just someones butt, look away for a second, if the site of a random butt is going to scar you/youngsters/wife/husband, you've got bigger problems - its just a butt.
