Default Allegheny trail

Planning on a late April start from Springer to Pearisburg and then hopping on the Allegheny Trail and thru hiking it. Anyone have any current info on the availability of a shuttle at the gap in the southern portion of the trail? How about resupply? Food as well as fuel. From what I can gather it is a rather under used trail offering lots of solitude. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I am aware of the published guide for the Allegheny Trail. Just want some first hand knowledge.

I participated in a thread some time ago called Thru-hiking the Allegheny Trail? which may provide useful information.

I was lookin for info on it from hikers, & found the aforementioned thread about someone on here who said they were going to thru it. I checked their trail blog & it went up to a week prior to them leaving and nothing afterwards. I sent that hiker a PM on here last week & they havent responded.

I hiked it in sections but for the area on both sides of White Sulfur Springs in 2006. I punctured my foot at the southern trailhead and haven't gone back to finish from Laurel Run south to the AT.

I looked at the other post by Minerva and that is as good as gold. I will still try to answer any specific questions. My favorite section was between Durbin and Glady due to the location of the High Falls. I've been back again since. The trail is great until you get north of Thomas, WV. Then it is all road walking to the PA border. Beaker wants to blaze another trail and connect it to the Laurel Highlands Trail in PA. But we don't have a route yet.

Check with Hikerhead. He is a walking encyclopedia on anything and everthing related to hiking in VA. We did a very short jaunt on it last weekend up to the eagle/hawk observatory tower as an addendum to another hike we did that day(You can sleep in it if you are hiking through there). It has an awesome view.

Thanks J5MAN but there is a lot of stuff around here that I don't know about. But I do know there's a Whiteblaze member that lives close to where the missing 20 miles is. I'll let that person chime in if they want to.

To think some people might consider me anti-Allegheny Trail or GET! I'd post my response if I could. When I spoke it out loud, it made a mess all over my monitor, but I still had no idea how to spell it! Use your imagination.

It's all about time and fuel for my truck. Hope you find the help you need ki0eh. I've got neither. I hope you can locate people in possession of both. It's a wonderful idea.

You have done nothing to discourage me. It's a question of resource allocation. Mine are few and don't reach as far as would be required.

You need to recruit people nearer the trail you wish to develop and are more likely to hike it or benefit from it in some other way.

Went out on the Allegheny Trail yesterday, with the Wonderdog. We started at the I-64 trailhead at Jerry's Run. Time was limited so we went almost to the WV border and back.

I found the trail in good shape and quite enjoyable. There was plenty of water for Win. There was some creek area hiking, short steep stretches and lenty of in between. The trailhead kiosk has a topo with the trail marked on it. We are trying to find nearby roads to allow us to do Va and WV in day hike sections.

We are so enamored with the Lake Sherwood area that we are planning a week's camping there, during spring break, for paddling, hiking, biking and backpacking on the Allegheny Trail.

Anyone else been out on this trail this year? While not as close to us at the AT it is only an hour away.

I am curious about the missing 20 miles and if it would be feasible for us to shuttle people around the gap. Will check the thread mentioned above and see what else I can learn.

NOTICE: Allegheny Wood Products has closed the trail through the Cheat Canyon for road construction and logging operations. A re-route has been blazed.

Watch this site for news of a re-route of the trail over Briery Mountain "north" of Rowlesburg. The Army National Guard is enlarging its practice firing range and will close the abandoned county road that the ALT currently uses. National Guard personnel are working with ALT maintainers to establish an alternate route. A re-route is expected before the end of the 2009 summer hiking season.

Section 4 is incomplete, although two segments are open and available for backpacking. The trail is open from the southern terminus of section 3 to Interstate 64, where it breaks and picks up again at Laurel Branch in Monroe County, ending on Peters Mountain at a junction with the Appalachian Trail.

Shuttle service from I-64 to Laurel Branch is available by contacting tracy@outdooradventures.com or calling 1-888-PLAYWVA. You will need to make any shuttle arrangements in advance.
