Some friends of mine had a vehicle broken into and misc. gear and items stolen from it this weekend at the Mount Rogers trailhead on VA 603.
Just thought I'd put out an alert so others would know. Seems this area has been troublesome for quite some time according to the ATC website. |

Looks like the rangers would have stealth cams by now with all the car thefts....

LW, is that up at white top (600?) we usually camp out up top one night then ride the Creeper the next day.

Sounds like a great place for a boobie trap. I've got an old impala, but I can't think much of a trap.

yeah exactly. we should all get together one weekend down there and set up a couple of cars, and stealth camp within sight line/earshot. and when they come to rob my volvo wagon, WHAM! nine iron to the brain stem. perhaps it would be a good enough shot to paralyze for life. we'd leave him there, as if he were the car we just robbed, and sooner or later, his owners would come and find him. they would be out of cell phone reception, up sheit's creek without a paddle.
this news makes me sad. of all the tiny corners of Va, i would have thought that vandalism was the lowest in Grayson Co. how long has this been a problem in the area? you'd think that the rangers would do something, like the stealth cameras aforementioned. but do not worry in the long run ppl, God's justice, in the end, is vengeful, and the likes of these thieves, they're already dead on the inside, its only a matter of time for their seed to be wiped from existence. |

Seems to be a lot of problems in that general area http://rohland.homedns.org/AT/State/...enu.aspx?id=11

It would be very helpful if those whose cars were vandalized or broken into filled out an A.T. incident report form and sent it to ATC, even if the incident was also reported to a local agency.
An incident report form and information about reporting incidents can be found on our website here. If you misplace the link, you can find it again by going to appalachiantrail.org and following the following pathway: > The Trail > Hike the Trail > Plan a Hike > Health and Safety > Incident Reporting. Laurie Potteiger ATC |

I checked out the form. Pretty much the same thing I filled out for the Ranger. I recovered about 63% of the value of the stolen goods.
Law enforcement was supposed to be Hitting the areas hard this past weekend using bait cars. There was a total of 4 breakins that night. |

I guess that answers the question of what the locals do for fun in those small towns.

mrhyker is a family friend of mine and I heard that not only was their beer cans strewn about around the car, but that particular spot is notorious for break-ins.

thats a bummer. I parked there on my very first bbp trip to mt. rogers....back when it was safer. Either that or thieves figured our car was crappy therefore we wouldn't have anything worthwhile...which was about right.
