Looking to replace my 15 year old REI tent, I think it was a nightlight. Looking at a lot of tents online and it only makes it harder to come to a decision. Looking for a 2 man tent under $200.00
I really like the idea of a freestanding tent and the size of the tent is great on the Gunnison. The Clip flash is much lighter (in weight and the wallet) but not free standing. Does it all just boil down to weight. Primary use for the tent will be AT backpacking. What is your vote on the pros and cons? |

Used a clip flashlight for many years and it served me well. Not the lightest nor is it the most expensive. Not free standing but sets up very quick and easy. A bit tight for 2 people unless you are close. Reasonable size vestibule.
I never got wet in it even in downpours. The newer versiuon has more netting than mine and would appear to be better ventilated. For the price it is a good steady tent. Sometimes you can catch the last years model at a great price on campmor.

i personally dont care about the freestandingness of a tent but usually i prefer them not to be free standing for weight reasons mainly (and they tend to be cheaper because less poles=less dollaz). if youre worried about setting up on a tent platform, you can just use guy lines to reach down to the ground where you would normally just stake the loops of the fly. i have the og clip flashlight and am about to retire it (unless a friend needs to use it) as I am now the proud father of a TT Moment. I think that for backpacking you will want to go with the lighter option unless you are completely against tents that you gotta stake to stand up. i would also recommend looking at the Tarptents though. http://tarptent.com/squall2.html this is the squall 2, their cheapest 2 person option but there is also the CLoudburst 2 and the Rainshadow 2 which both are about $50 more a piece. Let us know what you decide.
