black snake http://www.dlia.org/atbi/species/animals/vertebrates/reptiles/squamata/colubridae/Coluber_constrictor.html says:"The species most likely to be confused with the black racer in the Park is the black rat snake, Elaphe obsoleta. The similarity in the two snakes is only superficial. Black rat snakes have weakly keeled scales while black racers have smooth scales. Rat snake vents have a mottled "checkerboard" pattern while racers have no distinct patterning. Finally, rat snakes have a distinct transition from the dorsum to the vent; the edge of the rat snake belly approaches a 90 degree turn while racers have a continuous, rounded transition. This reveals the black rat snake's arboreal nature, aiding in the snake's ability to climb trees."
Streamweaver's previous comments may be right but I thought this snake looked round. I admit I'm no snake expert, check the picture and you decide. |
