There are several abandoned rec areas on Clarks Hill Thurmond Lake. The Bartram crosses a road to one about 2 miles above the West Dam area. Further on, the Bartram follows an abandoned road that leads via the Lake Springs Trail to an old building used as a air observation point during the Cold War. The lake is on the Savannah River and forms a useful landmark that could have directed Russian aircraft to the Atom Engery reservation known as the Savannah River Project several miles below the dam and below Augusta, GA.
