Petersburg Campground as seen from the Bartram Trail

This point juts into Clarks Hill Lake Thurmond from Petersburg Campground. Petesburg was a 19th century town that shipped cotton down the Savannah River to Augusta on specially designed boats that came to be known after the town as Petesburg Boats. The Petersburg townsite was inundated by the contruction of Clarks Hill Lake Thurmond in the late 1940s and early 1950s as the lake filled.
