Better Than Expected N/A 2015 March 26, 2015 October 17, 2015 I started in GA on Feb 24 but, because of snowy trail conditions and forecasts of continuing snowfall, left the trail after completing only three sections. I re-started at Waynesboro/Rockfish Gap, VA on Mar 26, reached Katahdin on Aug 6 then returned to Rockfish Gap on Aug 10 and completed my flip-flop at Springer on Oct 17. After the difficulties encountered in GA in February, the rest of the hike was pretty straightforward and, based on my experience, I'd recommend flip-flopping to anyone planning on hiking the whole trail: weather conditions were generally favourable, insects were tolerable and there were rarely many people at campsites or in shelters. The first 20 days, to Harper's Ferry, were a little quiet, as was much of the southern leg apart from the Grayson Highlands (crossed over Labor Day weekend) and the Smokies. If being alone is not your preference, it might be well to find a hiking partner, at least for the quieter sections. Mike Kennett Square United States Noctambulant
