So when you slack pack, who is responsible for providing a day pack? Sory for being stupid.
The Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil day pack weighs 2.4 ounces and was great for side trips this year. It isn't all that durable but is reasonably priced,and effective. Another option might be the zPacks extra small zero pack but it is more expensive. I plan to use the Sea to Summit for a slack pack segment next year.

I used the top 'brain' of my pack which was detachable. I had to use a additional length of string on both sides to make it large enough to use a a backpack. Someplaces will provide a slackpack backpack, occasionally I used my full pack just without all the extra stuff in it.

I guess I could sew shoulder straps onto my largest stuff sack.

A day pack can be used and has been used for thru-hiking. So why not just use the same pack.

A very few places have day packs you can borrow, but really you are responsible. Many hikers just use their regular packs and leave most of the heavy gear (tent, etc.) at the hostel or wherever.

I read a journal of a mother and her 2 daughters. When they slack packed they took only 1 pack and took turns carrying it.
