I'm trying to calculate the distance between Davenport Gap shelter in the Smokies and Standing Bear Hostel. The map I am using doesn't have Standing Bear on it so I'm having to guess here. I'm coming up with 6 miles. Am I even close? Can anyone give a more definitive answer?

That's close enough. Anything less than 10 miles is just a stroll. :)

Davenport Gap Shelter to I-40 is listed as 2.8 miles and the Hostel is around 1.2 miles beyond that so I would say close to 4 miles total.

Guide book says 3.6 miles from the shelter to Green Corner Rd. Hostel is just up the road.

It's a good half-mile up Green Corner Road (head left if you're NOBO) past a handful of curves, with the hostel on you're right. The climb from I-40 is surprisingly steep, but otherwise it's a nice stroll.

I finished my Clingmans to Standing Bear section two years ago and I must say, the Smokies line to I-40 was/is a spectacular piece of trail. Just gorgeous and super cool, a huge departure from the previous 70 miles. And yes, the steps on Green Corner Rd to Standing Bear and NOT a cakewalk. Make sure you have some water for it.

The site doesn't have Standing Bear on it that I am aware. It lists the 1-40 crossing and a shelter trail about 10 miles further down.
