I know the feeling! Just bought my Greyhound ticket and hiker hostel reservation for April 2nd yesterday. I have just a couple random things to buy but otherwise I'm set for gear. I can't wait to get this show on the road!

Not a thru hiker, just a section hiker. If you can, go get that gear dirty before the big day. Set up your tent and get some practice in the rain. Maybe go sleep out in your sleeping bag on the back porch, etc. Good luck and have some great adventures. :)

Tom Petty once said that the waiting is the hardest part. he was sort of right...waiting for the start is awfully difficult. the only thing that was harder than the waiting for me, in retrospect, was the 5-6 months of hiking and the constant up and downs you have to do to finish!;) good luck and best wishes to all you starting out next year.

I tested my T.T. Rainbow out in the rain but had a few leaks. I re-seam sealed it so I gotta test it out again. I also have a new down jacket and Smartwool midlayer in the mail. When those get here, I'll test them out and I should be good to go.

I've been gathering gear and saving up as well! I should be getting my JetBoil and trekking poles from Santa in a few days! I'm planning a thru-hike starting the 1st of April. Of course I'm full of questions, but how far in advance do we need to pre-register for hiker hostels?

Most people just hike the first 30 miles to Neels Gap and buy all their gear there. You really won't need much for the first few days anyway, just a few granola bars.
