Hello all. You are welcome to join a group of hikers out for January 17-18-19 nights in Harriman park near bear mountain, New York. Mixed crowd - young/old, experienced winter hikers/new to snow, mileage focused and camp lovers. Pm me if interested! Shelters for some, tent a very good idea...

You know I'm coming. I sent around a request for a roll call in the other place, and didn't get some replies that I expected. Oh well, it'll get sorted.

I may be able to come for one of the days, possible Saturday. My work may demand otherwise. To be seen. ...

If you're up for it, I'd love to see a gear list . Would it be accurate to say lows could be close to zero?

not so bad on the weather -- although you do say "could be...". Average low for that time would be only 20 degrees, with record low of minus 9. split the difference between average low and record low and you get 5 degrees -- which is what i plan to be ready for before/until i see a real forecast.

i will gladly post my gear list after i put it together... likely later today. my list will be what others would call "stupid winter light." you may want to encourage others to post their likely more sane lists -- and i know other threads have winter gear list posts.

as my bag is only rated for 15 degrees so that's like 25 really in my book.

All I can say about my gear is that there are a lot of geese out there who gave their "last full measure of devotion" to keep Snacktime and me warm......

you mean, aside from my own grumpy self? i was hoping that rocket socks would bring his ukulele, and i was going to negotiate with him on how much chocolate i needed to bring for him so i could borrow it.

hmmmm. is this becoming a pot luck? do i need a hostess gift?

Is this a yearly event? If so, I'll put it on my calendar for next year. I usually do a road trip to Syracuse around that time but I won't be there 'till the 20th this year.

I'd like to believe it is an annual event... so far just you and I have committed for next year! :) Seriously, if it turns out to be fun for the group, I would love to see it be every winter. the location might change a bit, but probably not too far north or south.

No requirement for the pot luck thing.....though it might be fun. Snacktime is making his fudge-filled PB cookies to pass around, and probably baggies of his GORP recipe for all....and of course a 2014 Trail Magic Bag for everyone. So I really need Kelvin to get me a head count.

Actually it's only been 87 AT miles since we started in Sept '12....but we've TRAVELLED thousands in our AT culture immersion! (although we did log over 400 total hiking miles)

Of course, the best part is meeting and visiting the WB friends we've made....more of that on this upcoming trip! (I can't imagine anything else that would persuade me to freeze my butt in the wilds of NY!)

Not that I was ever in control of it. Lazarus said that he wanted to organize a group for January, and asked me where I'd suggest going. Then he started going around telling everyone that I was leading. Well, he'll get all the organization you'd expect from that.

Elk Pen at noon Friday.....first overnight at Fingerboard shelter. This is the plan for the low and slow group, as it's about how far Snacktime and I can get in the available daylight. If you want your car moved elsewhere, let us know. My thought is that Kelvin will have a map/list of the various parking/bailout points, and those of us gathered will buddy up and do some driving to those places to leave vehicles, then be shuttled back to Elk Pen to start the hike. We'll need to do cell phone # exchanges, etc at that point if anyone wants to be waited for at Elk Pen to hike with a group, etc.

Itinerary for the Low and Slow Group (individual mileage may vary):

Sat: Fingerboard Shelter to Wm Brien Shelter 4.6 mi
Sun: Wm Brien Shelter to West Mtn. Shelter 3.6 mi

Bigeyes....how close can you get? I know the Metro North has lines that run north, but am not sure precisely where. If you can get anywhere near BearMtn on Friday morning we'll pick you up, and can bring you home (or to a metro stop) Monday.

Also, everyone planning to be at Elk Pen at noon: Kevin and Snacktime and I will be at Bear Mtn at 11 to drop off a car, then head to Elk Pen for the noon start. If you want to park at one of the bailouts between those 2 points and be shuttled to Elk Pen, PM me with the details and the ph# you'll be using and we'll try to arrange it. If you are coming by train from NY, if I haven't been already placed in service, I could pick you up at Tuxedo RR station and we could start hiking a bit earlier and they can catch up, so you don't have to hang around the RR station for almost 2 hours. Then I can pick up 2 passnegers (my car seats 5, but my wife & I & dog take up 3 spaces) - wherever (Bear Mt., Tuxedo RR station, Harriman RR station, Sterling Forest bus stop). Then I will either start hiking from Sterling Forest end of County 106 or Elk Pen lot off of Arden Valley Road. I will hike to Lake Tiorati parking lot where my car is. I will be accompanied by my dog (shih-tzu) Trekker. So now I want to know where and when I should meet 2 people to give rides. If we choose to start hike at jct. 17A & 17, I could take Parker Cabin Hollow Trail to White Bar to Island Pond Road to Island Pond OR Wildcat Mt., Furnace Loop, Indian Hill to the AT above Agony Grind and then come down to Elk Pen and continue across to eventually pass island Pond & onward to Fingerboard. If we meet at Harriman RR station, we could take the Sapphire Trail to the AT and then eastward (northbound). Then hook up with others at Island Pond to Fingerboard. These options make longer full-day hikes. So I am agreeable to whatever people want me to do. Note: If the train comes in much earlier then noon, I would think rather than hang out at a train statiopn in the middle of nowhere, it makes more sense to spend the time hiking. Of course you could do the Harriman RR - Sapphire to AT option without needing a ride from me. So let me know what 2 people would want. If someone wished to have my services, please e-mail me [email protected] ([email protected])and I will supply you with my cell phone number.

Still thinking about showing up on Saturday, possibly driving to Tiorati Circle early and hiking up to Fingerboard Shelter to meet up, then hiking to William Brian shelter on the AT and back to Tiorati via the Ramapo-Dunderberg trail. Would that work, in terms of finding the group and spending some quality time? Does anyone have specific hikes planned for Saturday? Is anyone coming from Connecticut just for Saturday who might like to carpool? May or may not bring my husky, who is big, exuberant, and sheds. (Your car will never look the same.)

OK> Here are my plans for Friday and where I'm leaving my car. I'm meeting Teacher & Snacktime at Bear Mountain at 11:00 am. I am going to leave my van in Parking Lot #1 until Monday and will be able to shuttle anyone back to their cars. I called the Palisades Parks Conservancy -- 845-786-2701 to ask about parking. This is what they told me (in case anyone else hiking is going to park there): Register your vehicle with the park police at the number above, extension 208 and park in Lot #1. Since there will be no one in the "toll booth" when I drop my car, I won't have to pay the fee. If that's the case, I may just make a donation to the conservancy.

I emailed Askus about meeting at the RR harriman station, so I'm probably all set. One other thing-- Does anyone have a sleeping pad of any sort they can lend me or sell to me? I'm used to using boughs to make my beds, so I don't have one. Unless there are a lot of fir trees in this park???

I have a thermarest z-lite pad. It's the accordion style. I'm not sure how well they work in the cold. Actually, I have two of them if you want to borrow them -- as long as Teacher doesn't mind me bringing them in her car.

Kelvin will have a map/list of the various parking/bailout points, and those of us gathered will buddy up and do some driving to those places to leave vehicles, then be shuttled back to Elk Pen to start the hike.

We'll need to do cell phone # exchanges, etc at that point if anyone wants to be waited for at Elk Pen to hike with a group, etc.

Itinerary for the Low and Slow Group (individual mileage may vary):

Fri: Elk Pen to Fingerboard Shelter 3.7 mi
Sat: Fingerboard Shelter to Wm Brien Shelter 4.6 mi
Sun: Wm Brien Shelter to West Mtn. Shelter 3.6 mi
Mon: West Mtn. Shelter to Trailside Museum & Zoo (and Bear Mtn Pkg) 4.5 mi

There are several loop options for individuals to increase their hike lengths and still meet at the shelter in the evening....talk to Kevin.

Gonna have to miss this one. Buried in work. It's a good thing, but it do get in the way of taking a whole day for a hike. Can't have it all at the same time!

Hi Scotty .. the number I called was for Bear Mt. State Park. Won't help you. I've left my car at Tiorati Circle for an overnight, but that was during the summer. Maybe call the visitors center ... In fact you don't have to call to park at Bear Mountain but then you have to go inside to register with the park police.

Dear HikerMom,

Having a wonderful time at Harriman Camp. Wish you were here. The counselors say it's too cold to swim, but that we might be able to take in a nature hike. Apparently they're serving lemonade at this hike, as I overheard someone talking about a lemon squeezer. I prefer iced tea or pepsi, but if lemonade is all that's offered then I guess I'll be happy with that. Also, I think a hairdresser is coming along, as I heard a couple of guys talking about getting microspikes. All I know for sure is that somebody swears we'll have snacktime there, and that there will be cookies. I'm looking forward to it, and I'll be sure to send pictures and maybe even a postcard.

Dear Teacher,

I miss you so much. It seems like you've been gone for a long time.
Be sure to change your underwear everyday while you are at camp. Be sure to brush your teeth before bedtime too. :p
Be nice to the counselors and do what they ask of you. Don't forget to share with your friends. Play nice! I hope you won't get hurt going through the lemon squeezer. If you do, I hope you know where to find the camp nurse. Don't forget to wait an hour after you eat before you swimming, if the water warms up. Snacktime is good! Be sure to take lots of pictures. Give your fellow campers a hug for me. Write again soon.

I just want to let you all know that altho I did not spend much time with most of you, Trekker & I (askus3) had a great hike. However, we are dayhikers and I did not bring a light and knew i had to get out by 5 PM. So it was nice seeing everyone at Elk Pen. Enjoyed my hike with Big Eye and later on going thru the Lemon Squeezer with both Moose & Big Eyes. But at the LP/AT xing, I really had to move out, said our good byes to Moose & Big Eyes (Trekker gave a parting bark) and we took off. Glad the two of them were together when I departed as I was comfortable they would be OK. Stopped at Fingerboard Shelter and had a pleasant chat with Coach Lou and made it out to Tiorati at 4:50 PM. Trekker was one happy furry mess and had a nice warm shower and brushing when he got home only to play in the the snow on Saturday and he is that one big fuzzball again!

Good morning! It was nice meeting you all: Malto, 1azarus, askus, Trekker, Big Eyes, Teacher & Snacktime, Elf, Socks, Coach, Moose, LIHikers (Mr, Mrs, and Tora) Scotty. GG, sorry we never managed to hook up! Four of us hiked up to West Mountain, but nobody wanted to camp on the ridge in that gale.

URL for the site is in the trail register at the Palisades. (What? No register books at the shelters?)

A particular shout-out to Malto, 1azarus, Dave, Scotty and LIHikers for attending to T&S. That could have been ugly. All's well that ends well, and you guys made it end well.

Got ya! Well, I can't wait for our hiking trip in the warm south, this Spring. I don't know how Deer Hunter and other true Southerns would deal with a "real winter"!! LOL ;) We might not see the cool NYC skyline but we have great weather!! (crossing fingers and toes) It's quite cool here today.. But, no snow! :sun

Well, looks like from the pics y'all had a good time! It's cool that so many of you could get together for a hike!

The snivel meter on my pack said 18F at 4am on Sunday morning. I'm sure it was a few degrees colder by dawn. I had ice in my moustache all day Sunday.

Part of the reason for cutting the trip short was that nobody was all that eager to stay at West Mountain - in spite of the spectacular view. It was blowing a gale up there - straight into the open side of the shelter. It looked to be a chilly night.

I think my count was thirteen humans (plus GG, whom we never quite managed to meet) and two dogs. Nice to have faces to put to all the names.

Our thanks to whoever organized this trip. Me, Kathy, and our dog Tora had a great time. The hiking was good but the hikers were even better.
Maybe we can explore the east side of the park in warmer weather.

Wonderful to meet and hike with all of you! After leaving the Brian shelter on Sunday morning, I hiked the AT to the Hudson River and got there before 3! And I met someone on the way from my area to give me a lift. Everything worked out great. I hope that everyone who stayed Sunday night was more comfortable than Saturday night!

Wow, AK that's sounds frigid!! Ice in the ole mustache'? ... yeah that's cold. ;) I saw some pics that Teacher put up! Y'all looked GREAT out there. I saw that West Mountain Shelter was up on the highest elevation point along that piece of the trail. Good call! :)

Teacher said "her story" would be considered "hair curling". I can't imagine! But you know, I never worried once about Teach & Snacktime out there hiking, with friends like you guys. I knew everyone would be cared for in every possible way. Sounds like a "rescue" of some description was in order for them this trip. Teach is an amazing woman! I admire her so very much! THANK YOU AK, and all the others, from the bottom of my heart, for everything you guys did to keep everyone safe. *HUGS*

I'm so happy about all the people that were able to make it out on this trip.... 13 humans!! ;) Askus3's dog looked so cute!

We were back here on WB anxiously waiting to hear about the trip and thinking about you! :)

HAPPY MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY!! ENJOY! :sun

Thank you to this motley crew of hikers for being so welcoming and creating such a good time. Got back early this morning and enjoyed a long hot shower! I thought that Harriman was beautiful and look forward to hiking it again some summer or fall :)

@ Teacher & Snacktime: Thnk you very much for your thoughtful bag of trail magic. Wow, they don't call you 'Snacktime' for nothin!

Hey Kevin, I gave a shout out of thanks for the rescue crew on FB, and fully plan to do the same here. You guys were amazing, and I literally get teary thinking about how caring everyone was. Thanks for you and Sarcasm for hanging with the slowpokes then coming back for us, thanks to 1az, Malto and Scotty for retrieving packs and toting our heavy load. Thank you for a dinner that I only wish I'd felt well enough to eat. Thanks to LIHiker and Kathy for the escort and shuttle back to the car.

This journal will be tough, and wonderful, to write.

I have to agree on the weather. I have visited lots of nice places but I like the balance Virginia provides climate wise. :)

now whatd i tell ya about planning too much?:)
how are you feeling, coach told me you might have hurt yourself going through the lemon squeezer

Actually the Lemon Squeezer wasn't that big a problem....it took a lot of effort, and was quite tiring, but no hurt there. The injury came when I got too tired to handle my own pack weight....my knee popped when I tried to lift the pack to move it to a better position and wait for Kevin and Dave to "rescue" us. It's ok though. The real nemesis was the overall fatigue. I was fine after a good night's sleep.

I only did enough "planning" to get everybody there.....and not enough to get myself truly prepared. Oh well. But Snacktime did great! He managed his pack like a pro.

Thanks Trillium. I'm still working on that trip report too! This one has been amazingly difficult to write....so "many thank yous", such a wonderful experience. Hopefully I can do it justice....eventually. (and I can't wait to get a second crack at Harriman!)
