Do people use a regular shoe box or an USPS priority mail box or something sturdier?

USPS, you can send a USPS box forward to the next PO if you don't open it for no charge.
You probably don't need a bounce box unless you have certain items that are hard to come by on the trail such as meds.

The USPS boxes are pretty sturdy.

If you planing to "bounce" the box ahead multiple times, I recommend using a 5 gallon plastic paint bucket with lid. There are very sturdy. You can get them at any hardware store.

You don't have to have any particular container/box to bounce it, afaik. So size and durability are up to you for what you need. If you're only bouncing ahead things like chargers, electronic supplies or what not and it's small then that would dictate what you need.

That said, consider just resupplying as you go from town to town. It's often cheaper (no postage costs) and most if not all supplies can be found in many towns along the trail. Resupply is a lot easier than it used to be years ago when services were few and located further from the trail.

there's no need to use a plastic bucket especially a 5-gal, USPO boxes are free, weigh less and easier to ship

a 5 gallon bucket is very durable and has been used a lot in the past. what is it you want to bounce? that would help us.

1) A 5 gallon bucket would be heavy and cost more than a small sturdy corrugated box. 2) If you take "possession" of the box, it will be scanned as delivered, and you will then have to pay to have it forwarded. Make sure you tell the counter/window person that you don't want to accept the package at this time - only forward it. 3) Only 1st class and Priority can be forwarded for free. You can do this in person or over the phone (call the forwarding PO directly - bring a list of the PO phone numbers and business hours with you.
