I live there. Yes. Unbelievable! Those who have stopped off in Helen for resupply and visited (the now closed) sporting goods outfitter in the south end of town.. that is the area destroyed.

Hiawasee would have been a greater loss from the POV of AT hikers IMO, being rather more hiker-friendly. Worse yet, imagine if Mountain Crossings @ Neels Gap, Miss Janet's, Damascus, or the like had gotten nailed by a tornado -- yikes! :(

Had FoxNews on all morning and heard the remnants of Katrina were expected to go through eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina. I've been wondering how people in those areas are faring.? As well as the other areas it hit(of course, we all know what it did way down south.)

We had bands of torrential rain all day, US 441 was closed in the Smokies due to downed trees and high winds.

I'm about 40 miles west of the Smokies near Knoxville. We have had 25 to 40 MPH winds since about noon.

Just 15-25 mph gusts and a bit of rain here yesterday. Today was nice and breezyNorth of ATL we had waves of rain, some torrential, some just steady soakers, more than enough to get the fall garden seeds out of the ground. There were angry clouds all day, a tornado was reported to touch down a few miles away from my house. I'm afraid many blowdowns will be on the GA AT. I can't go look this weekend though, I'll be attending an event that actually celebrates the passing of a hurricane: http://www2.davidson.edu/news/giduzhp/hugo/hugofest.html

Hurricanes often blow birds around too. Today at lunch, while walking around a tiny lake in the middle of an office park in a suburb of Atlanta, an area of heavy development, I saw a Bald Eagle dive down, grab a bass, then circle three times to get enough altitude to clear the trees and buildings before flying off. He's lost. He's really lost. But I hope he comes back.

I don't want to even contemplate this at all.
