My wife and I plan a thru hike in 2015, and we have beenworking on equipment weight. I just purchased a new lightweight digital camerafor the hike and need some advise on weight of digital photos. What is the suggestedlimit on the number of digital pictures?

As far as I know, the more pictures you take on your digital will not add any weight to the camera. Or am I missing something in your question?

Ah, I see it was posted in humor after I went back. LOL, I was thinking, is this serious!

Could you clarify your question some? Are you asking how many photos you might take? Or are you wondering how big a memory card to get or how many? Digital photos don't weigh anything:). The cards are negligible too. You can take however many photos you like pretty much.

LOL Actually, it was proven that digital data does actually have a measurable weight, but you need very, very, very sensitive equipment to see the difference. Only a gram weenie would bother. ;)

I've been wondering the same thing about my Kindle. How many books should I take weight-wise? hehehe

Best to avoid really heavy novels, they'll weigh down your heart and soul.

Man, that's some dry humor right there. I just thought it was standard mis-wording, which happens all the freakin' time.

If you cut down on the resolution you can get more pictures for the same weight.

My camera battery is rated at 1.00 A-hr and 3.7 V

An Amp is a Coulomb/sec, so multiply 1.00 C-hr/sec x 60 sec/min x 60 min/hr to get 3600 Coulombs

A Volt is a J/Coulomb, so multiply 3600 C x 3.7 J/C to get 13,320 Joules

If you divide by the speed of light (300,000,000 m/s) squared, according to E=mC^2, this works out to 1.48x1^13 kg or 1.48x10^10 g or 148 pg

If you figure on getting about 200 pictures for each battery charge, this means each picture weighs 740 femtograms, less if you get one of them Cuben fiber memory cards, but they cost a lot more.

About 40 femtograms more than I can carry. I really do not want to mark the camera off my list. Is there a way to cut the card in half? Could cut 370 femtograms from my load.

That would make you a fg weenie. I suggest cutting off the top half of the card. The top half of the pictures are mostly sky so you won't be missing much.

Uhhhh, you're a woman......use your power.

You: "Honey, I need you to plan of leaving this space right here free while you're making your preps"
Honey: "Uhhhhh, why?"
You: "That's where I'm going to keep the camera"
Honey: "uhhhhh, why do I have to carry the camera when you're the one wanting to bring it?"
You: "....<surely he knows why so I'll continue to play his silly game>.....This way I can reach it. If it's in my pack, I can't reach it and you'll have to come and get it out every time I wish to take a picture"
Honey: "sigh......<evil woman, I know what she's doing, but do I dare risk it??? No....not risking it>...."
