I am thinking about finding the driving distance from home (southeast Michigan) to different points on the trail. Is there a site that has the addresses or gps coordinates for different access points on the trail so i could use them in mapquest or something to find the driving distance and times.

Check the ATC web site

This is a favorite site of mine:

http://www.travelmath.com/

For instance, when I ask for the driving time and distance from Farmington Hills, Michigan to Hot Springs, North Carolina the results say 595 miles and 9 hours. The results page also shows the route that was used to arrive at those values.

Google maps works pretty well.

If the destination has a name, it usually knows where it is.
I.e. Woody gap, Unicoi gap, newfound gap, etc.

If there is a road, it knows where it is.

If you dont know the exact address, the AT is on the google map if you zoom in enough. Drag the destination and put it where you want to go. Put it right on top of the satellite photo of the parking lot at an AT crossing trail head. Or put cursor where you want to go , right click and select "directions to here"

For grins, I just did that here for Indian Grave Gap outside of Erwin, Found it visually, and said go to here. Of course, I had some idea where it was to start with , a few miles East of town.

Google maps works great. For giggles, click on two different road crossings where the AT crosses, and click "walking directions" on the left. It will sometimes show the AT as a route, with some pretty wild guess times...
