Planning to hike this Wednesday to Friday afternoon. Looking for snow/ice conditions on or near trail. I realize it's going to be cold but not sure if need to bring micro spikes. I'll be hiking with my jack Russell getting shuttle out from mountain harbour b&b... Thanks for feedback

I wouldn't do it if I were you saltysack... not this weekend or into next week. It's too cold for you and your dog, IMHO.

Ray's Weather Wednesday 1/29 forecast for Beech Mountain, just 10-12 air miles from Roan/Jane/Yellow Mtns and 1,000' lower: High 10 above zero, low 5 above. Similar lows tonight, and wind chills between 20 and 30 below zero by tomorrow morning.

In addition to Ray's Weather excellent and highly localized forecasts, you can always see real-time data at Grandfather Mtn, almost as close to Roan as Beech is (and I double-checked my DeLorme NC book and see Beech's summit is only 7-8 air miles from Jane/Yellow @ Roan). Grandfather's weather station is at 5,280' and right now, at 0530 Friday morning, Grandfather is reporting -13 deg and winds from the NW at 39 gusting 43. Highest gust yesterday was 80 mph. Wind chill: who cares? Too dang cold and windy to be out for long iffin you don't have to be.

Temps and wind conditions forecast for similar Tue-Wed of next week, with the aforementioned highs Wed at or near single digit.

Current temperature in Knoxville is 6* 6:00 am Friday, Jan 24. Good time for a leisurely walk on a beach in Florida.

Just to tell how cold Roan is, here is Mt Mitchell, it should have similiar to near similiar conditions...

Current conditions at MITC as of Friday, January 24th, 2014 @ 8:31 AM EST (13 mins ago)

Temperature:
-10.5 °F (-23.6 °C)

Dew point:
calculated at -19.1 °F (-28.4 °C) Relative humidity: 65%

Wind:
West (271°) at 23 mph with gusts of 27 mph

Pressure:
806 mb (23.8 inHg) station pressure

If you are going to be in Charlotte, look up Crowders Mtn, Uwharrie/Birkhead trails, South Mtn SP. Or the MST sections around Asheville/Boone (at least you can bail out onto the Parkway real easy) or the Eno River/Falls Lake section trails.

South Mountain has enough backcountry trails/roads to keep you busy for a couple days.

Might consider whether your Jack Russell, even with a dog specific coat on him, will be able to handle the wind chill and extremely cold temps (currently 3 degrees at elevation of 1800 feet about 30 miles from Roan). My 92 lb. German Shepherd with 2" of fur might be OK for a couple of hours but I wouldn't subject him to Roan Mtn environment right now.
