i think it would be useful to have a list of every transit point that comes near enough to the trail to be useful. of course harpers ferry may win the grand prize, but i'm sure there are plenty of others along the way

lets keep this to a radius that could be walked in one day if need be, such as gainsville amtrak. i'm really thinking convenience here

Hanover, NH has access either directly or via free local Advance Transit Bus to Greyhound and Dartmouth Coach bus lines (Boston and NYC service) these bus stops are right on the AT at Hanover Inn; AMTRAK, take free local bus to train station across from Coolidge Hotel in WHite River Jct, VT (NYC service on Vermonter train route), and Cape Air, 1 mile walk from free bus stop in West Lebanon, NH (flies LEB airport to BOS Logan or to NYC Manhattan via free bus connection at Westchester, NY Airport).

There are lots of subway stops in NY/NJ that can get you to the trail.

The Roanoke Airport is 10 miles from the trail in Daleville. Bus station is about the same.

There's no good way to walk to the trail from either location but if I'm in town and available... a shuttle is just a call away. I'm not in the book, I like it that way. I just shuttle for friends on WB or FB or others that contact me or ones that I meet in person. :)

I belive this has been listed before, It's not a sticky or article?

There are three bus stops I know of which are in very close proximity to the trail.

Marion, VA
Delaware Water Gap, PA
Gorham, NH

I forgot about Willimstown, MA - I've used that more then a few times. You can get pretty close to Salisbury, CT too.

Yeah, that's what everyone needs - an AT that is even more convenient than it already is.

Yeah, that's what everyone needs - an AT that is even more convenient than it already is.The AT was/is supposed to be convenient to get to. That was the intent of putting the trail within one day's travel of the major eastern metro areas in the first place. Since when is hiking an activity that we discourage?

This website http://appalachiantrail.rohland.org/ shows most of the trailheads, parking areas, and roads the AT crosses. I have found it very useful in the past planning section hikes.

take it as you read it, choose your own camp, permits notwithstanding. if you find yourself taking a hike from the country, so much the better i guess. my only concern with this thread was making it easier for vast majority living on the east coast to understand what a gem they have just sitting there waiting for them, mostly less than a two hour drive.

Curious about public transportation to Salisbury CT? Like how close? Never heard that before... Years ago there was a bus that ran up Rt. 7 but that hasn't operated for quite some time now. If there is a new alternative, I'm all ears.

There's a bus stop at Canaan, about 7 miles east of Salisbury. I forget where it comes from or goes to from there, Hartford maybe?

The vast majority of those living on the east coast don't know the AT exists and even if they did, would have no interest in hiking it. Even so, it is claimed several million people a year set foot on the AT. Mostly to walk a 1/4 mile to a vista or waterfall and back.

The Peter Pan bus from nyc to Williamstown stops at Canaan, and also at Sheffield and Great Barrington in southern MA, as well as many other places relatively close to the trail.

It's difficult to see a complete schedule on the website, but if you use click on the schedule link and enter a starting place and a destination, you will get the general idea. I've used the live chat function to pin down the options.

2 convenient airports, Albany NY is hooked to both rail and train service at many points between Rutland VT and where the AT crosses the Hudson at Bear Mt NY. The other is Lebanon NH airport for all of NH with a 50 dollar flight into Boston and NY.

Sorry Hill Ape. That post was snarky and uncalled for. I know your intention is well meaning starting this thread. If I'm not going to positively contribute I should hold those types of comments to myself.

You are correct 4eyedbuzzard as well. THX for reminding us(me!) of that.
