Couple sacks of pitted dates.
Handful of chopped nuts of choice.
Couple tablespoons unsweetened cocoa.
Handful of shredded coconut.
Couple tablespoons honey.

Use a food processor to grind up the dates then toss everything in and get a good mixture. Dump it all on a sheet of waxed paper twice as long as what you need. Fold over the wax paper and use it to flatten the mix into a rectangle of desired thickness. Slice into serving sizes and then toss it in the freezer till ready for use.

Enjoy.

Like it! SO GOOD to see someone passing on DIY useful trail food info that doesn't involve the all too common Honey Buns, Snickers, and pepperoni stick/Slim Jim(gag) options.

These bars are incredibly good and the freezer will NOT make them turn to bricks. You can bite into them straight out of the freezer and they will be chewy.

Scott Williamson(PCT yo yoer) made something similar. Delish. I think he bakes his though.

How long do yours last on hikes? They sound like they might become a gooey mess when it's a hot hike.

When it's cold they'll hold their form. When it's hot they still don't melt, per se, but they will soften. Never had them turn into goo.

My favorite snack is just kashi go lean cereal mixed with peanut brittle. I call it sweet feed. You put a ziplock of that in your pants cargo pocket and just dip your hand in every so often.

Indeed.

They will last longer than you can go without eating them. Also, be creative and try different things in them EXCEPT bananas.......that was no so bright of me, lol. Disaster is an apt description of how that turned out.
