So I got into a little conversation the other day about the continued appeal of "classic" backpacking food. My friend said she liked "good ol' raisins and peanuts"-- yes, raisins and peanuts, nothing more. For me, eating jerky and dark chocolate makes me feel more like I'm on a hike.

Is there anything you go "old school" on in your hiking menu? What is it, and why do you like to have it? :-?

If it's a shorter hike I'll take a couple old MRE rations from the service with me, that takes me back.

Spam. When camping with my parents as a little kid, we always had Spam at some point. (Well, it was trailer camping, but I slept outside in my sleeping bag because it was "real camping", and to escape my poor father's snoring!) The taste of Spam always reminds me of that.

+1 on the Spam. Also, I add plain M&M's to my raisins and peanuts, and occasionally some Honey-Nut Cheerios.

Is Gorp an actual acronym for "good old raisins and peanuts" or was that made up later? I've always wondered.

Anybody mention Ramen? Or Raymonds as some hikers call them.

Of all the junk I've eaten on trail this is the one thing that hasn't gotten old, just add something different each time to dress it up.

Sardines and Crackers

A lady hiker friend and I learned that we both liked sardines while hiking one day. The next trip out we both brought sardines to share. She had slices of American cheese to go with the hot sauce and sardines, the cheese on sardines sounded discusting but was great.

It's real. That's what it originally (and currently) stands for. Of course, you can add anything else you like....

Is Gorp an actual acronym for "good old raisins and peanuts" or was that made up later? I've always wondered."The word gorp, a term for trail mix often used by hikers and Girl Scouts, may stand for "good old raisins and peanuts",[9] "granola, oats, raisins, and peanuts", or "grapes, oranges, raisins and peanuts" or "gobs of raw protein". These are all probably backronyms or false etymology. The Oxford English Dictionary cites a 1913 reference to the verb gorp, meaning "to eat greedily". A gorp picker can be a term used for a person who will only eat certain things out of any mixed food."
