I was looking at the Durango Hometown Hostel website today and noticed it said the business is closed on 8/21. Does anyone have any news if this is permanent?

I was planning on staying there after my thru-hike this summer...

I'm not sure if it is permanent but I am now planning to stay at one of the motels after my thru hike.

Anyone have a recommendation of Hiker Friendly Hotels/Motels in Durango that is willing to accept a bounce box?

Finding someone to hold a box in Durango should not be a big deal. The PO is one block off the main strip. They had Sat hrs in Oct 2013. Might want to contact:

Durango has lots of thrift stores if you just need some clothes to wear home.

The motels on north Main from the 2000 block and up are your best bet for less expensive lodging. I think they would probably accept a bounce box if you had a reservation. It's a four day hike for most people (73miles) from Molas to Durango at 18 miles per day if you are timing your reservation. You will hit Main at 25th Street. There are free trolleys that go up and down Main.
