I am thinking of getting this tent for my upcoming hike of the Foothills Trail, and was wanting to get any feedback from anyone who has this tent or has used this tent. I was wanting to gob with this tent because my gear budget is limited. http://m.academy.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_10051_633553_-1__true?color=Green&N=882470662&Ntt=No+limits&Ntk=All

Specs say 4 lbs. I would prefer a good tarp and DEET to an iffy, heavy tent. For a single trip a blue plastic tarp would do.

If your budget is limited, this looks like a decent beginner tent. As time goes by and you experiment with gear, you'll want to save your pennies and upgrade eventually. Frankly, I've been impressed with the gear that I have chosen to buy at Academy Sports, though I've not bought anything so major there. You could spend more than $56.99 on a good tarp and still be exposed to bugs during bug season. YUCK.

Another idea,-- if this truly is only for a hike of the Foothills Trail, why not rent or borrow?

My brother has a similar model. He likes it, and has used it for three years of Boy Scout camping as an assistant Scout Master.

A one person shelter at 4 lbs seems like an awful lot to me. Look nice, but..... Shop Sports Authority or others a one man at that cost should be a lot less than 4 lb, Or see what the 2 man is and share. Even REI scatch & Dent sale. I would shop more for something that important if I had a do over. I carried a 5 lb 2 man for years (Scouts and not) and never knew the diff until I got a LH Duo. Now I can't imagine hauling the old tent.

This tent though, is a perfect example of lighter is not always better. Sure that 2 pound weight initially looks good but if you pay close attention this is not an adult tent. There is no way that a normal 6' man will comfortably fit himself or any of his gear in that tent.

I have looked at that tent, and saw the reviews. I am 6ft. Tall with a large build.(265 lbs.) figured I would fit in the No Limits tent better.

Took the plunge, and bought the tent. Also got the footprint on clearance for another $8. Footprint can be used with poles and rain fly from tent for a lighter weight shelter. So far, I am liking the tent as a whole. Will report back later about the stripped down version.

That was my first backpacking tent, good starter tent, heavy but served me well, gave it to my grandson recently.

This is the tent I bought. So far is an excellent starter tent.

Did you do your hike yet? I have a SMD scout you can borrow and give a try. I am just down the road in Augusta.

I actually bought one of these to look at. They have made it longer now, about 8' now the package says. It weights 2.4 lb with heavy steel stakes. I havent tried to set it up and dont know if I will.

Dont know about water proofness, the seams are taped now however, so I hope imagine it is somewhat water resistant. The fabric doesnt appear to have much PU coating though, I cant really see any.

I actually bought it to consider taking and setting up in Yosemite to leave my backpacking gear in while I dayhike. Im not comfortable setting up my hexamid and leaving $$$ of high end stuff visible in it unnattended. Also cant take backpacking stuff on trail for a dayhike without a wilderness permit for that day, they can give a ticket. I can set up this $25 tent with my stuff inside, put a TSA luggage lock on the zippers too and actually feel a tiny bit better because no one can see in the tent to know no ones there.

If I do this, I plan to leave it by a garbage can with a note "free tent"

Well I am not a pro so I could be wrong but if I saw a tent with a lock on the zipper I would assume that no one is at home and I would also assume that there might just be something in there worth protecting.

You would have to be at the front of the tent, and lift up the rain flap covering the zipper track to find the tiny lock on the two zippers at the top of the track. Anyone that makes it that far has to have pretty bad intent anyway.

Its an interesting little tent for $25 , as long as you dont mind lack of sturdiness (no guyouts) , ventillation, or most likely decent water resistance.

Used my REI didvidend and a little cash to buy this tent for my son a while back, didn't want to spoil him with a light weight fancy schmancy tent like mine...this thing is still three pounds lighter than the first tent I owned 35+ years ago. One thing I did was get him one for two people, if he's like I was taking a companion along was always fun...so I married her. :)
