Today's visit to the dermatologist has convinced me. I'm going to have to use sunscreen when I'm outdoors, which is pretty much every chance I get. Can anyone recommend a good brand? I'm not a big fan of slathering my skin with greasy, perfumed stuff, and I don't like hats either, except for warmth. I know I'll be hiking in shade mostly once the leaves come out, but I'll need protection for the exposed areas.

I've been reading up on sunscreen for the desert portion of the PCT and 30 SPF is more than adequate - higher than that is just more money for diminishing returns.

If money isn't an issue check out Neutrogena Dry-Touch....

Thanks, 10-K. My doc recommends Elta MD UV Clear #46, and that costs more. I'll be doing some research too.

Here's a good blurb from the Skin Cancer Foundation - http://www.skincancer.org/prevention/sun-protection/sunscreen/sunscreens-explained.

And another from the Melanoma Foundation - http://www.melanomafoundation.org/prevention/facts.htm.

I agree with you - it's a big deal. This is something I've neglected my entire life and recently had to have some places on my ear frozen.

Neutrogena all the way.

Living in Maui, sunscreen is a daily requirement. I highly recommend Banana Boat Sport 30SPF. Waterproof, sweat-proof, and fragrance-free. It sticks well when you are sweating or swimming, but like most sunscreens, you do need to reapply periodically. My all-time fav!

I feel like Banana Boat is too greasy. I like the milky, silky texture of Neutrogena more.

My doc recommends Elta MD UV Clear #46,
My derm recommends that for me too, for every day use. I find that it really isn't enough for hiking / sweating out in the sun. I don't know that I would carry it.

I do carry an Aveeno solid sunblock stick meant for babies. It's titanium oxide based and seems to work well enough with minimal need for reapplying.
