My 2014 installment of the AT will be from Waynesboro VA to somewhere around Unionville NY--plus or minus 30 miles. I plan to hike the month of June. Any thoughts on how to get from somewhere around Unionville to a Greyhound station, or Amtrak station, airport? I am flexible on the end point of the hike. I'd like to hike around 500 miles, but I need to end somewhere that has access to ground trans. Thanks!

If you hike a little further, there is a "Appalachian Trail Train Staion" at Pawling, NY with a limited schedule.

That's 100 miles north of Unionville.

From the High Point State Park office on Route 23 it's a 6 mile walk or hitch to Port Jervis NY. Check the NJ Transit or MTA websites for commuter train schedules and connections to all NY airports or Amtrak stations.

As far as I know, there's very spotty train service from Port Jervis other than during weekday commuter hours, but there is bus service to NYC on a regular schedule.

You will end your hike in the NYC commuting zone. There will be no problem from there which I believe has direct bus service or anywhere near there. At the hardest call a cab to get you to a train station. Use Google maps for direction from the trailhead to NYC and set it to mass transit options. This will tell you what bus or train you will need. Good luck.

Thanks for the tips. This helps a lot. I can get from Port Jervis to Newark Airport several times a day. Hopefully the hitch into Port Jervis isn't bad.

Now I just need to schedule the 500 miles down to the day so I can book a flight :-)

Here's a link that might be useful:

Port Jervis is south (that's "A.T. South") of Unionville, and one can ride from Jervis to NYC Penn Station by train for $21.75

or ride a Coach USA bus.

The former is more frequent.

North of Unionville is Greenwood Lake
