View Full Version : Looking for 20-25 mile trail.
Any suggestions on a 20 -25 mile hike within a 200 mile radius of Erie, Pa. It could be in Pa, Ohio, or NY State. A circular hike would be nice so I'm not retracing my hike. Ant thoughts?

Look up the Susquhannock Trail System in Pennsylvania. It's longer than 25 miles but might be a good fit for you.
Susquehannock has cross connectors now so can shorten the loop. Also Quehanna Trail with cross connectors can be made into weekend loop. Chuck Keiper Trail, and Allegheny Front Trail are other weekend backpacking loops. These are all in the northwest quadrant of PA.
200 miles from Erie might just get you to the Adirondacks. No end of choices there.

Not quite, it's 240 miles from Erie to Syracuse even, on I-90 - add 60+ just to see the blue line.

isn't the Elk trail near there? nice chance to see some rare animals east of the Mississippi

Some have (I haven't yet) seen elk on the Quehanna Trail which is more loopy (and anecdotally better maintained) than the Elk Trail.

Quehanna and Black Forest trail are both very nice loops that can be broken up into smaller weekend loops. Donut Hole is a good linear trail. Chuck Keiper can be broken up into two loops, one about 25 miles, the other about 30 miles. Susquehanna is fairly easy, but is a much larger loop. I haven't done it, but the Oil Creek Trail isn't far and it is a loop trail as well.
I am from Erie too. I have done most of the PA trails. Susquehannock is my favorite but is 85 miles. Quehanna is 74 miles. Black Forest is 42 miles. A loop close to home is the Hickory Creek Trail in Allegheny Forest, is 12 miles and a short drive. Most of the trails are point to point in our area. The West Rim Trail (PA Grand Canyon) is point to point, 30 miles, but Pine Creek Outfitters near the north end of the trail has shuttles.

Just a thought but would you consider a shuttle back to your starting point? At 20-25 miles it wouldn't be very expensive and would open up some other options for you. Whatever you choose, enjoy your hike! :)
There are lots of trails in the Allegheny National forest, including the a big section of the North Country National Scenic Trail. The North Country Trail has a good web site along with maps and a data book.
