This week during our weekly maintenance trip, we installed some log steps and rehabbed some of the trail that leads down to Erwin, TN. Upon return to the trailhead (by Uncle Johnny's), I saw some of the guys working across the road and 'discovered' the least used section of the trail. The official trail is on the other side of the guard rail, parallel to the road and continuing across the bridge. There is a walkway there and we rehabbed the step onto it. Who knew?

The good news is - since no one hikes on this small section (I'm sure most walk on the road), our rehab should last another 20-30 years . . . http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-happy036.gif

The bad new is - since no one hikes on this small section, many 2000 miler certificates might be invalid . . . http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-fc/yikes.gifhttp://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-rolleyes010.gif

I wonder how many other inadvertently unused sections there are . . . . http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-merv/thinking.gif

I remember on a recent section hike when I stepped across the guard rail to cross the street to Uncle Johnny's I made a mental note of where I crossed it so I could go back to that spot as I continued on the next day. I know....it's a curse;):o:rolleyes::confused::sun.

Thanks for the continued trail work, mt squid.

Thanks for the continued trail work, mt squid. You must've been hiking South . . . on the other side of the bridge it is more obvious and a SOBO hiker would need to step over the guard rail to get to Uncle Johnny's. You're Welcome, map man!

i must of missed it......it's the snows fault ;)Either that or you were going for the $.40 Snickers at Uncle Johnny's . . .

the AT thru Damascus is actually on the Creeper trail from the town park to the stairs going NOBO. there are boundry markers all along it. the road walk thru town pre-dates the Creeper so it was left blazed

Boundary markers don't actually mark the trail but the corridor. If you look at the GPS red line on Google Earth, the trail crosses the Creeper near the caboose, takes a right on Laurel Ave and meets back up with the Creeper near Sundog's.

http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-think004.gifhmmmm . . . . most perplexing, Sly. I am not sure how you got the red line on your Google Earth pic, but also my Google Earth map is not accurate going into Damascus, but yours appears to be, via the red line http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-confused013.gif. . . which has me wondering how accurate Google Earth and/or Google Maps is concerning the AT? Does anyone know of other discrepancies?26265
