For a two night weekend hike I can get by with my Golite VO24, but it does get pretty tight on space. For three full days/nights I'll take my Jam 50.

The same as my two week pack or my thru-hike pack, a ULA Circuit. I suppose I could use a smaller pack for a weekend hike, but I already own too much gear.... :)

I'm a schlub, I'd use my Granite Gear Nimbus Ozone. I'm dating myself. If I were a more worthy hiker I'd use the Vapor Trail and save a pound, but there are risks and tradeoffs doing that. The Nimbus is a tried and true workhorse, has done 1/3 of the AT and then some.

A light hiker ought to be able to make it with a 2 lb. pack I'd think (like the Vapor Trail.) But for a 30 lb. load I'd guess more like a 3 lb. pack (Nimbus Ozone.) All this based on technology from... 7 years ago? Yikes.

I tend to carry a little more stuff on weekend hikes, but it still fits in my thru-hiking pack (an old Gossamer Gear G5). I carry more because they tend to be shorter, more "social" hikes with other people who tend to camp more than hike, so I carry more camping stuff.

Ohm 2.0 !!! this! same pack on use on multi-month thru/section hikes. Can't imagine why I'd use a different pack. Well, actually, for a 2-3 day summer weekend I might get by with my REI flash-30 pack if my wife is with me and we can share gear (tent/stove). Unless we decide to carry in some "liquid refreshment" and maybe even a juicy steak, as we sometimes do in the summer, then it's the heavier OHM 2.0 all the way.

I use my GG Crown 60 wheather it's a week or month, have used the REI Flash 50 but it's just not as comfortable, if GG ever comes out with a 40-50 liter I'll have to buy one.

If you look at the AT as a series of 3-5 day hikes, for me it's all the same stuff. GG Crown 60-I traded up from my Vapor Trail and just love that pack.....The other 6 packs are now collecting dust........

Me too. Just got mine a few weeks ago. It's my only pack, so I guess I'll be using it no matter the destination or duration of the hike, at least for now.
