Sometimes I fret at not being able to afford the latest weight reducing backpack, tent, bag, thingie, etc, and then I get the privilege to watch a presentation today at the Amicalola Kickoff by Gene Espy on his gear when he hiked the AT. He said it was mostly army surplus, and most of it he displayed surely looked like it came out of the back bin of the Salvation Army. Makes you realize that what's most important is the hike itself and the people you meet.
By the way, for those who do not know, Gene Espy is Appalachian Trail finisher #2.
