Hobart! One of my favorite places is Tazzie!! I hitch hiked Australia for about a year back in 1988 and made it to Tasmania and fell in love with the place. I went backpacking there for a week and ran out of food! A German hiker found me trying to spear fish in a lake I was so hungry! She thankfully took pity on me and fed me. What a great time! I hope I get to meet you on the trail! Good luck!!

I am a hiking and camping novice. My best friend decided to do a 2015 NOBO thru-hike about six months ago and I offhandedly said I would like to come along for the adventure, not really knowing what I was getting myself into. Months went by while she did further and further research and I beat video game after video game. This Christmas she got "Appalachian Trials" by Zach Davis and gave it to me after she was finished. I read it in a day. Something like a switch went off in me because of that book and I became fully on board. Researching the trail is now my preferred activity, which is kind of crazy from where I was just a few weeks ago. I am not to the point where if she (impossibly) backs out I will do it alone, but I can see myself getting there once I have all of my gear. Thanks for reading this far. I am so glad to be a part of this awesome community and looking forward to meeting all you beautiful people.

I just told a good friend about my plan to hike the AT and in his supportive incredulity he said "that's insane." I told him it makes me happy how insane it is. :)

After some deliberation and due to more appropriate timing in my life, I've decided to change my plans for a NOBO to a Flip-Flop starting in end of May/early June near the NY/CT heading North. After completing that, I'll travel back to that NY/CT spot and head south from there. I'm slightly inexperienced so it made more sense to start there than doing a strict SOBO hike in June. I like the idea of walking in one direction, but neither NOBO or SOBO make as much sense to me at this juncture.

Reason your thru hiking: I love nature, I love being able to carry everything I need to survive on my back, I need a break from the 'real world', I value experiences over material possessions and I love a good challenge. I also look at it as a major detox for my body, which won't hurt. I also love feeling 'connected' and for me there is no better way to feel that way than being in nature.
Level of experience: High. I have spent many nights in the woods and have been on plenty of solo backpakcing trips.

Traveller and Digital will be walking north from Harper's Ferry around May 9th. We hope to flip-flop and walk as far as we can by mid-October.
We do this to be happy.

Catnapper will be flip flopping, starting at TN91 just south of Damascus, and heading North. I'll then head south to Springer. I've hiked the further southern sections in the last years, and wanted to both avoid some of the crowds, as well as see some new territory. In past years, life (weddings, graduations, family vacations...) kept me from a thru. I'm not sure I want to thru this year, but I'll see. Honestly, I just enjoy meandering up the trail, and seeing all the sights. If there is something off the side of the trail, I may very likely go to see it. I'm planning to start March 10.

I am currently on my 3rd tour of duty over in Afghanistan (this time as a contractor) and I thought what better way to celebrate coming back home then to thru hike the Appalachian Trail. Its been on my bucket list for awhile now and I look forward to crossing it off the list! I am bringing my 2 yr. old dog Luna with me. She is well prepared for this adventure. I grew up hiking the AT in the white mountains of NH and she has gone on many overnights with me. She's well trained and extremely friendly. I am heading South bound because of my intended start date due to my arrival back in the states. July 1st at the latest!

I'm finally finishing up grad school and it's time to start this pilgrimage! We would prefer to go NOBO but SOBO is going to fit our schedules better. I used to work in Great Smoky Mountains National Park so I'm glad I get to work hard for a long time and then make it to the place I consider my true home. I feel like I've been planning this trip for the past 4 years but finally committed to hiking this past September. I couldn't be more excited! I just need to pass my defense and hope the grad school gives me the thumbs up.
