My son (13 yrs old) and I will be embarking on our 4th year section hiking the AT this year. Last year we made the switch to hammocks. We always bring our 20* mummy bags, but lay on top because it's so hot at night. This year, my son wants to ditch the bag for his Snuggy to save weight. Would save over 1lb. Has anyone tried this? My fear is that he may get cold if the temp drops. We will be in the northern half of SNP in late June. Is this doable? Or too risky?

That is a wonderfully terrible idea!

Just for a reference those sites lists an average low temperature of 55 degrees for June.

if that's the average low then 45 wouldn't be unheard of. i would take my 40 degree quilts. JRB nest under and sniveler on top. snuggy might get you down to 60, maybe!

Tell him the snuggy is best for summer and he can still take it... bring the Marshmallows Chocolate and Graham.

My snuggy barely keeps me warm at 65 on my couch. I wouldn't take that alone. He will get cold, and it will suck. I'd stick with the mummy bags and if he wants the snuggy, it will be comfy around camp before bed

My son used a snuggy on a backpacking trip, with about 50 degree weather at the beach. He was fine.

I would do some backyard testing or make sure you have a bailout point on your hike. I have seen some chilly temps in June.

It might work if he had some insulation under him, like a blue pad and had a light fleece jacket for some extra insulation if needed.

I'm guessing it's going to be blazing hot by the end of June in Northern VA, but it can still get down right chilly near dawn. Even in mid summer with 90 degree days, I might start out on top of my sleeping bag, but at some point in the night I end up in it.

OK, thanks for all the responses. I was thinking it was too risky and you guys confirmed it. Thanks!

Not that it's normal, but I have seen temps in the 40s in SNP in July. More likely in the 60s-70s at night, but lower temps are not unheard of. I have also seen it in the 90s in June. Either way, no reason to take a 20F bag. My 14 year old uses a Marmot 40F bag he bought himself at Dick's.
