Just curious as to who will be out there. Please, post your start date (exact or approx), number in party, expected miles/day, etc.

Frieden - female, 36, FL
Ed - male, 1, FL
Start date: Early March
# in party: 2
Miles/day: 10 - 20
Off day: 1/wk.
ETA Katahdin: 7 mos.
Reason: Vision quest; taking time to savor nature and smell the flowers (after the snow melts); plan to take lots and lots of pictures.

Matt and Nicole
Start Date- March 1st
# in party- 2
Miles/Day- 7-10 early, high teens later
off day- few and far in between, can always make some progress
ETA Katahdin- five months
Reason- I took a 4,100 mile bike trip from Oregon to Maine last summer. While riding one of my friends (the Gambler) hooked me on the idea of thru-hiking. I figure I might as well string along as many adventures as I can before I leap into a career. My girlfriend didn't like the idea of me leaving her out on more fun, so she's coming along.

I've had the idea in the back of head for the last 12 years or so and 2 novembers ago I went on a weekend trip and ran into a few thru hikers and from then on I have been planning. So this year is my turn.

Shrimp or M.K. Mailler
starting March 27th (day after mom's birthday)
Male, 23 week after start date
Only myself, until I find someone else to hike with for a while
Miles/Day will start around 8-10, not exactly sure yet, and hopefully will advance to 20 or more.
1 0-day per week so far planned, hoping for no more than that.
ETA late july or early august, as I might decide to yo-yo, depending on how I feel.
Reason: Not sure, but I've been planning this thing for 3+ years now and it's been getting pushed back repeatedly. It's about time I escape for a while.

Start Date- April 1st (days before or after, depending on good weather)
# in party- 2
Miles/Day- 7-10 first 1-2 weeks, whatever we need to do later (I can't imagine many 20+ days but maybe that stamina kicks in)
off day- morale days will be taken and enjoyed as needed
ETA Katahdin- 6 months
Reason- We will have been seriously planning, saving and "shaking down" for 2 years by then. We think the best time for us to go is pre-mortgage and pre-kids and that means now.

Hey all,

I plan to thru hike the AT north bound from Springer this coming spring. I will be starting on March 21st 2006 on the Approach trail from the park.

I am planning on averaging 12-15 miles or so a day, and plan on taking roughly 6 months of the trip. I may get a few higher milage days in but speed is not my goal! I am out there to enjoy the hiking and the overall experience.

I have been thinking of doing the AT for years and finally the time is right! I am single, unattached and have the resources. I will be going to the ALDHA gathering at Dartmouth this coming Columbus weekend..hope to see you all there!

David

I just have to add this little tid bid I just thought of... A 6 month thru hike is a fabulous reason to quit a job I don't really like that much!!:banana

Finally, after following Whiteblaze since February 2005 I have decided it's time to join in the fun! First of all I want to thank everyone who contributes to this amazing community. I've learned so much over the course of the last eight months and couldn't have progressed in my planning without it.

why: peter palmer did it in 48 days in 1999 but that was aided (doesnt count in my book). even if im not trying to go fast, im gonna finish in around 60 days so i figured i might as well push a bit and see if i can set a record.

ps, does anybody know an exact number of days for the fastest un-aided south to north???

(I'm actually flip-flopping with a mid-May start in Virginia, but I'll add myself to the list since eventually I'll be hiking with y'all)

Me: Scott, male, 33, central Illinois
Start date: May 20th, somewhere in Virginia, possibly near Roanoke
# in party: 1
Miles per day: hopefully 18 or so
Off days: not too often
ETA Katahdin: mid-September (fingers crossed)
Reason: It seems like a good thing to do after finishing a zillion years in graduate school.

Age: 21

Miles per day: Mid to upper 20's (I have to finish before grad school starts)
Off day: Would love one a week, but not sure how it will fit the time table.
ETA: 12-14 Weeks
Reason: You'd get tired of hearing them all, but seeing the sights, being alone (an introvert's dream come true), seeing if I can do it, and a heck of a story to tell to grandkids seem to top the list.

Male, 48, Bethel, Ohio

Start date: March 18
# in party: 1
Miles/day: whatever works

ETA Katahdin: when I get there (hoping for late Sept)

Reason: Many, many, many! Start with "I've wanted to for 35 years". Add in that I currently hate my job, but don't know what I want to do next. Need some mental relaxation and stress relief. It's mid-life crisis time. And six months hiking the AT beats six months at a fat farm or in a gym for losing weight and getting fit!!! There's more that I can't (or won't) put into words.

Reason: I'm going off to grad school in the fall, and I need some time to do something big (and something a bit nutty) before I go off on that final educational trek. ;)

ivanputski

The name was given because of the behavior similiar to the famous Polish wrestler, Ivan Putski. Of course that was many years ago now. Will have to see if a new trail name is given next year.

I'll be 47 when I start NOBO in early April; I live outside ATL, and have done most of the GA AT, so I'll fill in the gaps this winter and start out from wherever that may lead me. I've already done the approach trail twice - not again!

I'm actually going to throw my hat into the ring here. I'm shocked that I'm doing it, but what the heck. Tomorrow I talk to HR about a leave of absense or leave without pay to see how it'll pan out. Wish me luck on that front.

Jay - Male, 27
Trail name: none yet.
Start date: Early to Mid March
# in party: 1
Miles/day: 10 - 20, goal is to reach K by late September
Off day: 1/wk max.
ETA Katahdin: 7 mos.
Reason: I want to hike the Appalachian Trail, basically it's that simple. I'm not at a "transition time" in my life necessarily (although the hike will precipitate one), but now is not a bad time to hike, either.

I look forward to meeting everyone on the trail. Even if a thru doesn't pan for 2006, maybe I'll get to do some multi week sections farther North than I've been.

So add me to the list please. Thanks!

There are currently 100 registered members who have decided to give it a shot next year (2006). 30% plan to hike with others. Assuming no overlaps (an overlap would mean both in the party are registered members and listed themselves separately), if we count all potential partners whiteblaze knows of 139 people hitting the trail between Jan-July of next year. Good Luck. Keep the entries coming. Look for updates in the articles section under Class of 2006.

I plan on reaching the big K by August (hopefully)...Most everyone who posted here is leaving in March, so you are sure to have company.

What we ought to do is have some way of identifying whiteblaze members so we can say HI when we meet. Especially all us March 1 starters.

If you don't mind my asking, what is the origin of your trail name?

Hey there! I am planning my NoBo hike starting mid-feb., anyone else looking to do the same? I have scheduling conflicts that require I start earlier than most so I can finish in June. Outside of the weather aspect I figure the early start will give me some great winter shots! Does anyone know when spring usually hits Tenn. or N.Car.? Hope to see you all there!!!

Ania - F - 24 (25 in April)
Trail name: until I start the trail, I will not know
Start date: First week of May
# in party: 1 - hopefully will convince some friends to go
Miles/day: having hiked only a handfull of times in my life, and only twice in recent memory, I really have no idea.
Off day: When I need it.
ETA Katahdin: 2007, as I'll probably only do 1/2 way this year, from GA to Maryland. Too many weddings & sicknesses in the family to stay away for more than 4 months.
Reason: I went on my first hike in years in October at Maryland Hights in Harpers Ferry. While I followed the green, red & blue marks marking my trail, I noticed at one point the white blaze. I recalled distant childhood memories of driving on I90 in Mass. and seeing a bridge over the interstate marked "Appalacian Trail," and my mother and grandmother telling me stories of my greatgrandfather doing large chunks of the trail 40+ years ago. My job & life in general suddenly seemed like an itchy sweater that I was desperate to chuck. And so, I hope to do just that for a while, come May. (Yeah, long story, I know, I'm a chatter-box).

Age: 31
Thru-hike start date: Arriving in Atlanta and staying at the hiker hostel (Josh and Leigh) on March 18th. Hiking: March 19th.

Previously hiked Harper's Ferry, WV (hometown area) to Bear Mountain, NY in 2004 and Amicalola, GA to Hot Springs, NC in 2005.

Trying to do this thing start to finish this time. People think I'm insane for retracing the sections previously hiked, but they fail to understand the physical and psychological value of a complete thru-hike.

I always hike alone. I sometimes (temporarily) find myself ending up at the same place as friends. I am currently the President of the Lazy Hiker's Society along with friends Sal Paradise and Scavenger.

My pace should be faster this year. However, I have no itinerary or planned distances. This will depend strictly on conditions alone.

I am an employee of The Outfitter at Harper's Ferry. If you make it there, say "Hi!" to Laura and Ron.

Trail Name: MrsGorp, www.trailjournals.com/mrsgorp
Start Date: Feb 24, it’s the best way to spend my birthday!
Hiking party: 1, hope to meet up with and make new friends along the way
Hike plan: Taking it one day at a time, walk home to Vermont, rest up a bit, then beyond to Katahdin, not planning a timeframe or miles, whatever happens, staying flexible. The only plans I’ve made right now are how I’m getting to GA (Amtrak) and my ride to Springer (MotherNature).
Reason for 2006 hike: Well, there hasn’t been a day in the past 29 years that I haven’t been connected somehow to the AT. It’s time once again to do some walking along its path.

Been eating dirt and sticks with this guy for the better part of 20 years, if we're going to do it, the time is now.
