Had trouble with an REI Return:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Big-Agnes-Co...item5662fd48e3 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Big-Agnes-Copper-Spur-UL2-Backpacking-Camping-Tent-Includes-Free-Footprint-/371027953891?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5662fd48e3)

http://www.rei.com/product/865389/big-agnes-copper-spur-ul-2-tent

total from REI : $470 (including footprint)
selling on ebay for: $369 +$10 shipping
white blaze price: $345 + include footprint + free shipping & tracking/insurance or better offer

Used once, no tears stains or anything. Looks just like new can ship whenever its paid for. i may throw in an extra stuff sack just because.

Please private message me here or post how I might contact you if interested in a deal outside of ebay like a mailed check or something (ebay fees are horrendous, paypal too)

Thanks for your time

What was REI's justification for not accepting the return?

If you had a receipt and it's been less than a year since you purchased it, they should have accepted the return. The fact that it has been used should be meaningless. That's part of REI's "deal"... buy from them, try it, if it doesn't suit you, return it. So what "broke down"?

Fair price for a fine tent, but like HooKoo says, REI should accept the return, if you want all your money back, try again. This is the first time I've hear of REI not accepting a return, unless it has been over a year since purchase, in which case REI has recently changed their policy. If it has been within a year, try again and get your full $440.

We were returning an osprey and gregory (both unused) at the same time. The cashier didn't seem too happy about the large return.

I agree she should have taken it back, and contacted REI today. Their online customer service wasn't much help. They said I could ship it in but they could make no guarantees. I told the in real life associate honestly that we had used it once but I don't think she would have been able to tell had she opened it.

xalex,

I hate to say this, but this story is starting to sound fishy...

#1. You still have not answered the question "What was REI's justification for not accepting the return?".
An unhappy cashier is NOT a justification for denying a return.
The fact the tent was used is irrelevant. REI accepts returns on used gear. You just need a receipt showing you've purchased the item in the last year... and if you purchased the item as an REI member, you don't even need a receipt because they can look up the transaction based on your purchase history.

#2. Presumably you're selling this tent at a loss, yet now you're saying you might try to return it... why not just return it so that you don't have a loss? (I'm sure the answer to #1 answers this question as well).

#3. Something isn't right about your $40 footprint... not if we're talking about the matching Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 Footprint. That footprint retails for $70, and I don't recall REI discounting that particular item for more than about a 35% discount.

(NOTE: I was carefully watching for sales and clearances on this exact tent during the holiday seasons... hence the reason I know a bit about the pricing for this particular tent... I eventually found a killer deal at another retailer where I got the tent and footprint at a 20% discount on top of a 25% discount, allowing me to purchase this tent and footprint for $275.94.)

Hey HooKoo,

The way I presented the return is why it wasn't accepted. I was honest and said we had been planning on hiking the AT but plans changed and we're no longer needing this tent. She said you can't simply exchange it because your plans change, it has to be customer satisfaction related. Additionally I told her it was used (which it technically is but you couldn't tell). Your guess is as good as mine why it wasn't accepted back. I imagine REI doesn't like processing excess returns and we were returning 4 other items at the same time which weren't cheap either.

It's not worth the headache, so I'm selling at a small loss to avoid further headache.

You're right the footprint should be $70. My girlfriend bought it and I remember her telling me she spent $40 on it for some reason.

I went ahead and put up an ebay listing for the tent, $369+$10 shipping:

If you want to work outside ebay, I'll pass on my savings in fees to you and keep the white blaze price the same:
$345 + free shipping insurance and tracking

Footprint comes free either way, please let me know if interested. any requests or anything let me know, or if you know anyone in the market. i think its a good deal.

Last month I returned my rei passage 2 that I had had out a handful of times. They asked my why I was returning it, I said I wasn't happy with the weight and was looking for something lighter. Had ZERO trouble with the return. Also returned a cocoon pillow at the same time, no trouble with that either. I'm baffled.

:( I don't know either. REI is a 1.5 hour drive though so its not exactly easy to go try again.

I just added this stuff sack to the auction, throwing it in for free, its the 10 liter:
