Looks like my dividend hasn't posted yet, but the amount will be small anyway. What I'm really waiting for is a 20% coupon which I think comes with the dividend!

I thought about waiting for the coupon but I'm sure I'll find something else I need. :)

The dividend amount showed up next to where it said 2012 in bold, so for me anyway, the dividend was there but maybe they hadn't updated the page text yet to 2013. It defaulted to applying it during checkout, with a box to deselect if you didn't want to use it.

I'm not seeing my dividend either... but mine will be very small too.

As for a 20% discount... campsaver.com is advertising 20% off full-price gear. I just learned about them this past year and have placed a couple of orders with them. They've been good to me so far.

Same for me, only seeing my 2012 dividend. I want the new Exos 58 pack, and so that 20% coupon will definitely be a nice discount. With my dividend should b able to get the pack for around $125.

I think Slbirdnerd is right that they just haven't updated the text yet because I checked a couple of days ago and my 2012 dividend was $0.00 and now it says 2012 dividend $40.62.

I am also waiting on the 20% off coupon because I have a couple gift cards to REI to use and I'm going to be ordering a Big Agnes Copper Spur 2. 20% = $80.00 off!

I think you're right... because if you go thru the process of placing an order (not just lookup your dividend balance), the balance listed as your 2012 dividend will automatically get applied to your purchase.

If right, then the pack should cost me $144...I'll take a $71 savings in total.

Looking at the Delorme Inreach SE. 20% discount would be worth $60 on this seemingly never discounted product.

My dividend is almost enough to buy two mountain house meals :-)

2013 was more cottage gear, less REI for me.

My dividend was posted! $1.70!

Been a member since the late 60s, but I just don't buy a lot from them any more. Part of it is the cottage industry, but the other part is how I can generally get what I want much cheaper elsewhere. Hell, I have a whole bunch of stuff in barely used condition I got from REI when I was first getting back into backpacking.

The big dividends don't usually come from REI purchases, but from using the REI credit card. If you use that card as your primary way to charge gas and travel and whatnot, you can end up with a whopping dividend.

$330.85!!! Time to go shopping!!!

That's my biggest dividend yet, based mostly on me getting and using my REI Visa card last year.

Add to that, $225 from the recent sale of my Moment DW, and I've got some serious spending to do.

I've not looked mine up yet, but I have it set so our toll fees go to it. Plus we used it for a down payment on a car. For those not sure what they want they need, later in the year , I believe there is a method to cash it out

True. My large dividend came from using the REI credit card to go on an REI Adventure. Still, it amounts to a nice discount for the adventure.

The REI credit card is good for the 5% rebate on REI purchases but the 1% rebate on everything else is no better than my discover card and I get use of those rebates each month with no minimum when used on Amazon. So I get the money quicker and am able to use it for nearly anything. Not being a heavy REI shopper, the REI card wouldn't be attractive for me.

on another credit card related topic, I just opened a United airlines VISA. After charging $2,000, I got 50,000 miles and that will pay for four one way flights at the "super saver" award level. This will cover both of the trips I have planned for backpacking this year. Coming up with the $2,000 to charge was a challenge for me but I was able to prepay some things and you can charge nearly anything these days. No interest since I paid off immediately.

That's pretty good - even better than the Barclay Arrival card (40k miles after spending $3k/90 days).

I go for cash back cards..

Amex Blue Cash Preferred - 6% cash back on groceries, only use card for groceries.

Pentagon Federal Cash Rewards Visa - 5% cash back on gas purchases - only use card for gas.

Fidelity Amex - 2% cash back on everything.

CapitalOne Quicksilver - 1.5% cash back on everything - only use if not gas, groceries, or don't take Amex (Fidelity).

We charge about $3k-$4k per month so it adds up fast.

I especially like the Fidelity AMEX 2% on everything, we charge nearly everything to that, insurance, all travel, gear, pretty much everything except food and gas (where we get more back, like you). I need to get that CapitolOne VISA though when AMEX isn't taken.

I had to wean my wife off her REI Visa with the meager 1% back that she used to use for most of her buying. She said it was her "gear buying savings plan", which is hard to argue with!

So the REI 20% off coupon specifically excludes personal locator beacons or any GPS enabled device. I guess I'll have to settle for the regular 10% rebate (one year from now) on the Delorme InReach... still better than nothing given that this device seems to never be available at less than full retail.

Smart idea. REI Adventures don't count towards your dividend like other REI merchandise; using the Visa is a good way to work around that!

I was confused by this comment as well. Besides, REI is just the windowdressing that the card comes wrapped in. The actual card is issued by US Bank which is a publically traded company and is legally required to maximize short term profits, any "values" the company has are just an afterthought.

Actually, this is a common misconception. There is no legal requirement to maximize short term profits. Companies tend to look at short term profits and short term stock value because it makes Wall St happy and because bonuses are often tied to both metrics.

And often the maximization of short term reported earnings is directly contrary to long term value. I do this for a living and the number of long term oriented companies is tiny although most talk the talk.

legally required to maximize short term profits, =.

Managers focus on short term profit because that's what's best for the manager, IE: bad metrics that reward for only short term performance, get what you can and move on to the next gig, not the stock holders, and this has put many a company out of business.

Companies get the kind of behavior that they create incentives for. And few have learned anything even after this sort of thing nearly destroyed the banking system in 2008.

But REI is a co-op, not technically a for profit business.
