Recording hike on video-equipment???

I would like to document my section hike follies. I see a lot of folks uploading videos, but I wonder what equipment they use-GoPro, phone, camera??? Also, what do they use to get the "selfie" videos, but far enough away from the face to capture scenery. I'm looking at taking a light tripod so I can get some pics of myself w/o having to wait for another hiker to snap it for me, but do I take my heavy video camera?

My goal is to get some first person footage as well as shots of me hiking with background scenery as well.

I feel weird about narrating a video (talking to myself), but it may actually keep me company. Who knows?

Any input will be appreciated.

Leki and maybe some others make a hiking pole with a knob that screws off of the top to reveal a base plate that will accept your camera base. Good for a timed selfie. Some have made their own rather than spend $75.

Here is what I brought and why: GoPro camera, three GoPro battery packs, one GoPro charger, 4 each 16 gig SD cards, a 500 Gig Digital Foci photo-safe II, a mini tripod. Since this wasn't a backpacking trip, my intent was to keep the charger and storage device in my hotel and take the camera, SD cards and three batteries on my day hikes. When I got back in the evenings I would dump the data into the Photo Safe and recharge the batteries. The GoPro runs about 2.5 hours on each battery I got about 4 hours of video on each 16 gig SDCs. I did not have a pole for the camera so I used the tripod to hand carry the camera when I took videos and pictures. This was not ideal as can be seen from my Scotland Videos.

This September I am heading for Spain to backpack GR11 across Pyrenees, taking 44 days hiking around 500 miles. This will be a true backpack, tent and stuff. Here is my video equipment list: GoPro H2, 4 batteries, Leki Camera Pole, Charger, 5 each 16 gig SDCs, chest harness from GoPro, mini tripod.

I am still learning how to successfully make good videos with my GoPro. Some of my old videos on UTube were taken by much older cameras and it' easy to tell which. I love my GoPro!

For my hike, I'm going to use an iPhone in a waterproof case with a Stickpic and Joby Griptight Micro Stand.

I accidentally lost the "stand" portion and am only taking the mount.

For a good multi purpose tripod get the gorilla pod. it's the best one out there that you can attach the tripod to almost anything.
I have been using one for the last several years for my small pocket camera and they come in different sizes and weigh ounces.

I own a Gopro and realized that my cellphone does a better job at recording so I stopped using it.

The way I look at things is my cellphone serves multiple purposes while my action camera did not. Not to mention I get a lot more battery life out of my cellphone. I carry a 12000mah powerbank with me so I can easily get about 5 charges on my phone. I can also use it to charge my headlamp so I never worry about carrying extra batteries for it.

I also carry a brusnel mini solar charger that has a 2500mah battery that I will bring. That gives me another full charge and on sunny days the ability to charge the battery pack.

Throw in a stic pick, cellphone camera mount from ebay, and a few micro SD cards and its all I need. Cellphone cameras have really come a long ways.

Most of my set up weight consists of ways of keeping my phone charge vs the added weight of camera gear. For me this just works as a more versatile system and adds piece of mind that I will always be able to make a call when needed provided I have signal, be able to charge my headlamp if the batteries go dead, and record and take pictures all I want while on the trail. I also like to update my blogs and send a few pictures so if im in an area where im getting cell service I dont stress much about using my phones battery to do it.
