Did this section last weekend and it looks like a strange place to find a chimney anyone know the history or it? Part of the old cloudland area?

Just guessing from the appearance, but I'd say at some point, there was a smallish cabin there pre trail, and that's all that's left. Not much...I'd love to know more.

I believe that was the stables for the hotel.

I hike from Hughes Gap to the chimney frequently and always wonder about the history of the chimney. Seems like an unlikely place for a cabin. I've asked some of the graybeards and done web searches, but have never come up with anything.

Found on internet!

"I have an anecdotal history of that chimney. Supposedly, according to some Roan Mountain folks, it was a 19th century cabin that ended up abandoned, and then in more recent years (1950's ish) it was occupied by an old hermit that was known for being cranky with "trespassers". It finally just fell apart since then.

There's even a ghost story about it now... spooky!"

That would explain why the building's not there anymore!
