My first backpack project, made from mostly upcycled material. The only new material was the thread. It weighs 9.5 ounces. I am quite happy with it other then the mesh. The mesh is too fragile. I'll have to use tougher material next time. It cost me only $5.57 to make this. The material is 72 denier ripstop from an old 4 season tent rainfly that had a leak. Making this was 1/3 designing 1/3 cutting and sewing and 1/3 fighting with my sewing machine.

A couple more pictures.. I added thicker elastic on the front and side pockets because the thread was popping. I redid the sit pad pocket elastic with stronger thread.

Nice. I like that you recycled your tent.

I like it! What are the shoulder straps made of?

Did you use a marine grade thread (uv/ weather resistant)?

Very nice job! I'm all for repurposing ... you should see cabinet in my sewing room that has all of my old outdoor gear, just waiting for me to do something with it!

Thanks everyone. The shoulder straps have scraps of blue foam pad inside them. At first the foam was too wide so I had to cut bottom of the straps off, slipped the foam out and cut it smaller. Then I sewed the bottoms back up with some scraps of grosgrain for reinforcement. I used the same tent material that is used through out the pack but I added 4 extra layers of fabric at the top and then box stiched it and some grosgrain where the top of the straps meet the pack. I used 100% polyester thread. I have other tents that I am eyeing now, but my sewing machine is in the shop. My other tents are made with such thick fabric though. The tent I used for this was a 4 person 4 season "outfitter" tent with a full rain fly. I think I could probably make three more backpacks with what is left of the fly if I wanted to.
