Hudson and Big Lu owners of Bearded Woods speak very highly of Chuck and his new hostel.

Any idea if it is first come first served or do they accept reservations?

My husband just stayed there 4/6/2014 for 2 nights and they do take reservations. It was very comfortable and Chuck, the owner, could not have been nicer. He is not set up for credit cards yet-so cash works.

I recommend Woodchuck's to anyone I hear is near Damascus. He is all about the hikers and it shows at his hostel. He has the comfiest mattresses I have slept on on the trail so far, he offers continental breakfast and showers all for $25. Last I was there tenting was $10 and it included shower and breakfast, the yard is very soft green grass and perfect with just a zlite pad too. He is working on all sorts of upgrades and ideas at the moment, just added a Pacman arcade machine when I was there too. Also I think laundry is $5 for a full round load including detergent and kitchen use was not a problem. It's a great place.

I stayed at Woodchucks in June and couldn't have been happier! Chuck is a great guy and the services he offers are fantastic.
I will definitely be staying there when I resume my northbound trek in a couple of weeks!

Chuck's hostel is great, but like many (not all) other hostel operators, Chuck is just a great guy. Will do about anything he can for hikers. He has a well run and orderly hostel, great stay. Damascus is a super trail town.

There also is a nice house listed by Zillow in nearby Mountain City, TN (on Divide Rd.) that would make a fine hostel/hiking center for northeastern TN/ Mt. Rogers NRA. It is next to the Appalachian Folk School (with its 150+ beds).

I stayed at Woodchuck a couple of times. They were always full when I was there. Anyone know why he is selling?

I wonder if he just got tired of running a hostel. I know the city came down on him at Trail Days last year. I heard just before Trail Days that he would not be allowed to have hikers tent on his property. Don't know if that actually happened though. The price he is selling the property for is $259,000 while Zillow says it's worth $132,31. I guess he is trying to sell it as a business.

I thought that Damascus had banned tenting in town?

Anyone know if the new owner (R.A. Dählinger) is doing as good a job? Planning to stay there in a couple of days. Thanks
