One piece of the clothing puzzle I'm still trying to complete. Looking for some recommendations on a good, light weight fleece to be worn as a mid or outer layer.
Any advice is appreciated!
Marmot windshirt, light weight and blocks the wind. I had a full zip model with one upper pocket. I bought a patagonia R-2 for the thru but went with the lighter windshirt.
You specifically asked about fleece. My favorite fleece for hiking trips is the Patagonia R1 zip-neck pullover ... the R1 zip-neck hoody is even better. But for most 3 season hiking, an UL windshirt is much lighter and provides a lot of mid or outer insulation layer for just a few ounces. The Montbell Tachyon Anorak is a good one.

Any of the light micro fleece, or "polartec 100" weight fleece work well for me. Patagonia R1 is excellent, though a little thicker. I just got a Patagonia Capilene 4 pullover from REI on sale for less than fifty bucks. It's a grid fleece, feels nice and soft, and it's lighter than the R1, more like the old R.5 that they used to make. I think it will fit in very well with my layering system.

A what-have-you fleece with a company logo, from the thrift store. And, for the cold nights, a pair of fleece leggings (Reebok, I think) from the same place. A lot of decent fleeces get discarded, it appears.

hey if you don't want to spend the money on a Patagonia R1, checkout the C9 fleeces at Target, they often go on clearance sale.

Very much like Big Cranky's post I prefer Polartec 200 turned out in the dead of winter after a few miles 300 was more for Afghanistan - a little too warm. Might be OK for camp.

Cheap, knock-off 100wt fleece pullovers from Walmart for under 10 bucks. Who's going to care if it catches some stray embers from a camp fire? :)

For that matter, check out Goodwill. I bought a pullover fleece for $3.00.

thanks for all the responses...guess I should broaden this question to include soft shells and/or wind jackets. Really just trying to find a warm and light mid-layer.
