Any way to soften and quiet new Tyvec ground sheet?

Washing machine or just ball it up in your hands and then flatten it back out a few times.

I too have heard that the washing machine "trick" is supposed to help soften it up.

I seem to also recall reading something about tossing a pair of old sneakers in with it (I think the idea is that it's something more to help fold the sheet up more as it gets tossed around in the wash).

I also seem to recall reading that washing it can cause it to shrink just a little bit... perhaps not the way a cotton tee-shirt shrinks... it might be something along the lines that the whole idea behind washing or balling it up is to create lots of creases in the material... and the net effect of all those creases is a slightly smaller net dimension.

So if you haven't already cut the tyvec to size, wash it first, then cut.

Run it through the washing machine's rinse cycle, no soap. Works like a charm. I don't remember noticing any shrinking.

I just recently made a Tyvek bivy. Simply ball it up with your hands and rough it up for a few minutes. Comes out pretty soft.

I kind of like it the way it comes when new. I have one that I put through the washer and it is just like cloth now. My new Tyvek groundcloth I don't think ill do the same.

I've thrown it in the washing machine, but the results aren't all that impressive. 20% reduction maybe.

Hike and use it, it will soften before your very eyes ...

That's pretty much the opposite of my experience. 20 minutes or so on spin cycle and it went from loud and crinkly to soft cloth.
